SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- Western New England University scored the game's first 16 points in less than five minutes on its way to a 69-47 Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) men's basketball victory over the University of New England in the regular-season finale Saturday (Feb. 16) at the Alumni Healthful Living Center.

The Golden Bears improve to 9-16 overall, and, with a conference ledger of 7-11, will prepare to take on top-seeded Curry College in the league tournament on Tuesday.

UNE concludes its season with a record of 5-20 (4-14 CCC).

Damon Alston tallied a game-high 19 points to pace Western New England, including five treys. Ryan Mickiewicz added four baskets from long range in as many tries to finish with 13. The Golden Bears also got contributions from James Hock (9 points, 6 rebounds) and Musa Elsir (8 points, 11 rebounds).

The Nor'easters were led by first-year Devin Thompson (Winthrop, Mass.) with 13 points. Senior Sam Simpson (Eustis, Maine) scored nine on 3-of-4 from downtown. First-year Jesse Dykstra (Douglas, Mass.) chipped in with seven, and senior Jeff Duplisea (Wayne, Maine) knocked down a pair of three-pointers.

WNE hit six of its initial seven field goals to get off to the quick start, but Big Blue put together a 13-6 run over a 4:46 span shortly after to draw back within eight (24-16). Simpson made two triples to cap the stretch.

However, it would be the last points UNE would score in the half, as the hosts used the final eight minutes prior to intermission to build a 39-16 cushion. The Golden Bears made 52 percent (13 of 25) of their shots in the period, and 6-of-11 attempts from deep. Elsir had almost all of his production in the frame (8 points, 10 rebounds) to support Mickiewicz, who was leading the way with 10 points.

The Nor'easters connected on just 20.7 percent (6 of 29) from the floor in the stanza.

UNE did manage to out-score its opponent by one (31-30) in the second to provide the final margin. Thompson and Duplisea tallied all of their combined 19 points in the closing 20 minutes.
