The New York University men's basketball team earned another win over a nationally ranked team, defeating #17 Washington University 86-82 on Friday, February 15, at the Coles Sports Center in Manhattan.

The Violets (14-9, 4-8) appeared to have the game wrapped up with a 14-point lead and 7:49 to go. However, the Bears (18-5, 8-4) made it close late, cutting the lead to one in the final seconds before NYU put it away with free throws.

Ryan Tana (career-high 25 points), Devin Karch (career-high-tying 22 points) and Kyle Stockmal (20 points) led the way for the Violets, who earned their third win over a nationally ranked team this season.

Highlights

- NYU led 42-34 at halftime and stayed hot early in the second half, going up 51-39 with 16:10 left.

- Stockmal, Karch and Tana led a 7-0 run a few minuter later to give the Violets their largest lead of the game, 65-51, with 7:49 left.

- Washington kept the deficit between seven and 10 over the next few minutes. An emphatic dunk on the break from Max Wein with 3:05 left appeared to put a stamp on things, but the Bears made a late charge down seven with 50 seconds remaining. Washington eventually cut it to one with 7.5 ticks on the clock, but Tana hit both free throws at the other end to make it a three-point game again.

- Tana then made a huge play to seal the victory. After NYU put Ben Hoener on the line to avoid a potential tying three, he missed the first and was then forced to intentionally miss the second. The rebound bounced back toward him, but Tana ripped it away and was fouled.

- Karch added nine rebounds and a career-high four blocks to his 22 points, while Stockmal had four boards and three assists. Carl Yaffe also filled the stat sheet with 12 points, eight assists, seven rebounds, and three blocks.

-Five Bears scored in double figures, led by Matt Palucki with 16 points. Alan Aboona had 15 before fouling out, while Cooney finished with 12.

"It was a great atmosphere for our guys to play in front of," said Head Coach Joe Nesci of the Tear It Up! crowd of 1,342. "The guys really rose to the occasion. A big key for us was rebounding. Washington is an excellent rebounding team and we played them even on the boards."

The Violets return to the court on Sunday, February 17, when they host University of Chicago at Coles. Tip-off is at noon.
