Crusaders Rally For Win At Stevenson Alvernia, Up By Just Two At The Half, Wins By Ten

Owings Mills, Md. (Jan. 26, 2013) - Alvernia University (15-3, 10-2) went on a 22-6 run late in the second half to defeat Commonwealth Conference newcomer Stevenson University (10-8, 4-8) by a score of 69-59 Saturday afternoon at Stevenson.  The Crusaders, who were up by just two points at the half, were led by Lamont Clark (Parkesburg, Pa./Octorara) who had 18 points.

Alvernia found themselves in a quick 7-3 hole to start the game, before Kahlil Bennett (Old Bridge, NJ/Old Bridge) hit a three-pointer to bring Alvernia within one at 7-6.  After two from the Mustangs, and a jumper from Bennett, the game was tied at eight at 13:31.  Fast forward a few minutes, and the game was tied 12-12 at 9:34 after a Stevenson free throw.  Alvernia fell behind by two points twice in the next minute, but managed to tie things up yet again, 16-16 at 7:14.  The Crusaders went on to take their biggest lead of the half, 21-17 after another jumper from Bennett at 5:32.  Over the final five minutes of the first half, Stevenson took the lead back twice before Alvernia ended the half with four good free throws for the 27-25 lead.

The Crusaders started the second half by giving the lead back to Stevenson, 29-27 after two quick jumpers.  After a three from Terrance Bridgers (Drexel Hill, Pa./Upper Darby) the game was tied 31-31 at 15:47, a Mustang free throw tied it 35-35 at 12:36, a Crusader three tied it at 40-40 at 10:59 and a Stevenson jumper tied it at 42-all at 10:04.  This was the last tie of the afternoon, as Alvernia went on a 22-6 run going up 65-48 with one minute remaining.  The Mustangs managed to put up 11 points over the final minute, but Alvernia got away with the ten-point win.

The Crusaders return to action on Wed. Jan. 30th at 8:00pm when they host Albright College in a battle for first place in the conference.
