HOT-SHOOTING PRIDE DOWN NEWBURY, 79-66

WESTON, Mass. – Regis College shot a blistering 63.5% (33-of-52) from the field en route to a 79-66 win over visiting Newbury College on Wednesday night in New England Collegiate Conference men's basketball action. The Pride have now won five-straight games to improve to 10-14 on the year and 10-5 in the NECC, tightening its grip on the No. 3 playoff seed. Newbury drops to 14-10 overall and 12-3 in league games with the setback.

The Pride also shot 10-for-17 (58.8%) from beyond the arc led by a 4-for-4 performance from Carlos Bermudez-Glean (Boston, Mass.), who led Regis with 18 points.

Regis jumped out to an early 8-3 lead following a layup by Osanto Marc (Kissimmee, Fla.) but back-to-back baskets by Newbury's Peterson Bernard (Boston, Mass.) and Dallas Serrano (Valley Stream, N.Y.) made it an 8-7 game, prompting a Regis timeout. The Pride responded to the stoppage with a 13-4 run to stretch their lead out to 10 following a layup by Ethan Peana (Staten Island, N.Y.) off a nice feed on the break from Marc.

Newbury rattled off a quick 6-0 spurt on a pair of jumpers by Eric Watson (New Rochelle, N.Y.) and a tip-in from Tim Young (Brockton, Mass.) to make it a 21-17 game. Regis answered with a 20-5 run over the final 7:42 of the half and take a 41-22 lead into the break.

The Pride shot 69.2% (18-of-26) in the opening period, including a 5-for-8 showing from beyond the arc. Osanto Marc led all scorers at the half with 10 points, while Ahmad Charles (Cambridge, Mass.) added five points, five rebounds, and four assists. Newbury was paced by nine points from Young with Eric Watson adding five points and Dallas Serrano and Peterson Bernard chipping in four points apiece.

The second half was all Regis as they kept up their hot shooting to build leads in excess of 31 points. Newbury would not go quietly, however, as a Steve Rosemond (Everett, Mass.) three with 55 seconds remaining in the game made it a 78-61 game. A Watson triple 12 seconds later cut the lead to 15 and Tim Young's layup made it a 13 point game with 33 seconds left, but the Pride lead was too much to overcome as Regis held on for the 79-66 win.

Regis won the rebounding battle 32-28, but committed 18 turnovers to Newbury's 13, which the Nighthawks turned into 24 points. The difference in the game, however, was three pointers as Newbury went only 5-for-17 on triples compared the Pride's 10-for-17 showing.

Bermudez-Glean was joined in double figures by Ryan Chambers (Abington, Mass.), who scored 16 points and hit four threes, and Osanto Marc's 14 points. Bermudez-Glean added four rebounds, five assists and three steals. Ahmad Charles just missed out on his third-straight double-double as the junior scored eight points and grabbed 11 rebounds. Evin Matted (Hartford, Conn.) added eight points and a pair of blocks in the win.

Tim Young scored a game-high 21 points to go with five rebounds, two assists, and two steals. Eric Watson added 17 points and seven rebounds, while Steve Rosemond came off the bench to score 12 points and pick up three rebounds and three assists. Peterson Bernard also added six points and seven rebounds.

The Pride wrap up regular season play by going for their sixth-straight win when Regis travels to Daniel Webster College on Saturday afternoon for a 3:00 p.m. game. Newbury will try and bounce back on Saturday as well when they travel to Elms College for a 2:00 p.m. tip.
