Montclair State Tops TCNJ in Season Finale, 99-83

Montclair, NJ – Junior forward Ordel Goldson (Hackettstown, NJ, Warren Hills) scored a career and game-high 30 points and grabbed a game-high 16 rebounds to lead Montclair State University to a 99-83 victory over The College of New Jersey in the season-ending New Jersey Athletic Conference contest for both schools Wednesday evening at the Panzer Athletic Center.

Goldson, who turned in his 11th "double-double" performance of the season, connected on 13-of-16 shots from the field in the game. He breaks his previous best of 26 points, which he scored against The College of New Jersey earlier this season. It's the first 30-point performance by a MSU player since Andrew August scored 31 points last season against the College at Brockport in the first round of the Courtyard by Marriott Tip-Off Tournament at Farmingdale State.

Montclair State, which snapped a four-game losing streak, finished the year at 8-17 overall and 4-14 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference. It's only the second losing season for MSU in the last 12 years and the first time the Red Hawks have failed to win 10 games in a season since going 9-15 in 1995-96. Montclair State, which lost to TCNJ 66-57 earlier this season, splits the season series with the Lions and has now won seven of the last 10 meetings between the schools. The Red Hawks lead the all-time series by a 91-64 margin.

The College of New Jersey, which closed out the year with eight straight losses, dropped its record to 5-20 overall and 3-15 in the NJAC. The Lions, who's biggest lead of the game was at 9-7 with 16:56 left in the first half, couldn't keep up with the hot shooting by Montclair State.

MSU, which shot a season-high 58.7 percent from the field, made 16-of-27 from the floor in the first half to take control of the contest. Leading 29-23, The Red Hawks scored 11 straight points, including six by Goldson, to take its biggest margin of the period at 40-23 with 6:30 remaining in the opening stanza. Montclair State held the 17-point bulge at 42-25 at the 4:28 mark before TCNJ cut the deficit to 12 at 46-34 at the halftime intermission.

The offensive explosion continued for Montclair State in the second half. MSU built its advantage to as much as 25 points at 80-55 with 8:24 to play. The Red Hawks maintained the double-digit cushion the rest of the way. Goldson, who scored 18 of his points in the period got help from the senior guard duo of Brandon Sessoms (Newark, NJ, Weequahic).and Ken Rubenstein (South Orange, NJ, Columbia), who finished off their careers in fine fashion. Sessoms tied his career-high with 21 points in the game while Rubenstein added 14 points, his fifth straight and 16th double-digit scoring outing this season. .

Junior forward Tyler Ettin (Princeton, N.J./Princeton) and sophomore guard Jayson Johnson (Bordentown, N.J./Life Center Academy) topped New Jersey with 22 and 21 points, respectively. The Lions also got double figure scoring from senior reserve guard William Lester (Middlesex, N.J./Middlesex), who scored 14 points, along with junior forward Alex Fox (Washington, N.J./Westwood) and sophomore guard Ryan Keegan (Farmingdale, N.J./Howell), who each chipped in 10 points apiece.
