Five Saints Reach Double-Figures in Thomas More's 83-77 Win at Westminster

(NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.) - Five Saints reached double-figures in the Thomas More College men's basketball team's 83-77 win over Westminster College tonight (Wednesday, February 6, 2013) in a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) game at Buzz Ridl Gymnasium in New Wilmington, Pennsylvania.

With the win, the Saints extend their winning streak to 10 games and improve to 19-3 overall and 12-1 in the PAC.  With the loss, the Titans fall to 6-15 overall and 2-11 in the PAC.

Westminster took an early 12-8 lead when Adam Carswell made a lay-up with 13:34 to play in the first half.  Thomas More answered with a 20-8 run to to take a 28-20 lead with 5:14 to play in the opening half when junior small forward Brandon Housley (Covington, Ky./Holmes) made a lay-up.  The Titans used a 4-0 run capped by a Ron Martino lay-up to cut the lead to 28-24 with 4:20 to play in the half.  The Saints responded with a 10-2 run to extend the lead to 38-26 with 44-seconds to play in the half when sophomore shooting guard Drew Mumford (Louisville, Ky./Christian Academy) made a three-pointer.  Westminster's Martino made two free-throws with eight-seconds to play in the half to cut the Saints' lead to 38-28 at halftime.

Thomas More opened the second half on a 16-8 run to increase the lead to 54-36 with 14:54 to play in the game when junior point guard D'Carlo Hayes (Louisville, Ky./Male) made a three-pointer.  Westminster answered with a 21-9 run to cut the lead to 63-57 on two Reuben King free-throws with 9:06 to play in the game.  The Saints used an 8-4 run to increase the lead to 71-61 with 6:27 to play in the game when junior point guard Eliot Pipes (Nasville, Tenn./Hillsboro) made a jumper.  The Saints came right back with a 12-6 run capped by a Carswell lay-up to cut the lead to 77-73 with 2:34 to play in the game.  That would be as close as Westminster would come as Thomas More closed out the game on a 6-4 run for the 83-77 victory.

Reaching double-figure scoring for the Saints was junior power forward Josef Marshall (Dayton, Ohio/Trotwood Madison) and sophomore shooting guard Chris Richard (Louisville, Ky./Southern) with 16 points each, Hayes with 11 and Mumford and junior point guard Spencer Berlekamp (Cincinnati, Ohio/Kings) with 10 points each.  Richard led the team on the boards with seven rebounds, while Marshall added six and Berlekamp led the team in steals with four.

Thomas More returns to action on Saturday (February 9) when it hosts Thiel College on Senior Day at the Connor Convocation Center in Crestview Hills, Kentucky.  Thomas More will honor seniors Ryan Hamm (Maysville, Ky./Mason County), Ethan King (Maysville, Ky./Mason County), Michael Rowan (Goshen, Ky./North Oldham) and Ross Renken (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) prior to the 3 p.m. tip-off.
