DOVER, Del. – Paul Reynolds set the school-record for career rebounds as the Wolverines men's basketball team defeated Mary Washington, 67-52, in Capital Athletic Conference action on Wednesday night at Wentworth Gymnasium. The Wolverines (18-5, 8-2) are now just one victory away from matching a program-record for wins (2009-10) while the Eagles fall to 11-11 overall and 5-5 in the CAC.
A senior from Wilmington, Del., Reynolds went for 24 points while sinking 9-of-12 from the charity stripe, to go with 15 rebounds for his seventh double-double of the season. The Smyrna High School product now has 726 career rebounds, surpassing Tom Dickinson's 19-year-old record of 723.
Reynolds also got help offensively from several of his teammates as Wayne Lennon scored 16 points while Quincy Pettiford went for 12. David Langan finished a point shy of a double-double with nine points and 11 rebounds. Eric Selby also controlled the tempo of the game with six assists before fouling out.
The Wolverines never trailed in the matchup as Lennon hit a three to open the game just 36 seconds in. After a dunk by Langan and a layup by Reynolds, Wesley led 7-5, but the Wolverines then ran off nine-straight points, capped off by four free throws by Reynolds to extend the lead to double digits.
Mary Washington closed to within nine points with 2:28 left in the first period, but the Wolverines went into the break with a 34-23 advantage. The Eagles scored the first five points of the second half to cut the deficit to 34-27, but Pettiford stopped the bleeding with a trifecta, starting a 14-2 run that last nearly five minutes and sealing the victory.
Dylan Farinet and Taylor Johnson scored ten points apiece to lead the Eagles, who were outshot 45.8% to 43.5% on the night.
Wesley will look for its 19th victory of the season when it travels to York (Pa.) on Saturday, February 9, in a 3 pm start. The Spartans defeated the Wolverines, 77-69, earlier this season, but following that defeat, Wesley ran off 11-straight victories.
