Medaille Men Pick Up Home Win Against Penn State-Altoona

BUFFALO, NY--The Medaille College men's basketball team picked up an (86-71) win against rival Penn State-Altoona after a hard fought battle Saturday afternoon in the Sullivan Center.

The Mavericks got off to an early start by starting off the game on a 10-4 run. Not soon after, the Mavericks had another long run outscoring the Lions 10-0 during a three minute period. During the 10-0 run, Tyler Stevens scored five straight points for the Mavericks, including one layup immediately following a steal by Chris Willingham.

During the first half, the Mavericks outscored the Lions 49-37 in an offensive battle. The Mavericks were (16 of 26) from the field, good for (61.5%) percent. They also hit on (5 of 7) shooting from behind the 3-point arc, good for (71.4%) percent. The Mavericks also made it to the free throw line 10 more times than the Lions and hit on (12 of 13) from the charity stripe.

As for the second half, it was much closer. The offensive burst that was seen in the first half, was not seen following the half. Both teams stepped up defensively and made it much more difficult on the opponent. The Mavericks held the Lions to (45.5%) shooting from the field, including (3 of 10) from behind the 3-point arc. The Mavericks did have more success at the free throw line in the second half, hitting on (9 of 11) from the charity stripe.

Leading the Mavericks was Jammal Coleman who finished the day with (19) points. Also contributing for the Mavs was Tyler Stevens who chipped in 14 points on (4 of 7) shooting from behind the 3-point arc. Alex Baron added (14) points while Anthony Battaglia added (12) of his own along with (6) rebounds.

The Mavericks (13-8, 10-4) will continue their homestand Wednesday against D'Youville at 8 p.m. as they look to continue their winning ways. The Mavericks will look to continue their hunt for first place in the AMCC Conference.
