NEWBURGH, N.Y. – Mount Saint Mary College alumnus Carlos Valdez (Carolina, Puerto Rico), a member of the class of 2012, has been drafted to play in Puerto Rico's top professional league, the Baloncesto Superior Nacional (BSN). Valdez was drafted with the second pick in the second round, 12th overall, by the Guaynabo Mets.

"I'm very excited and humbled by the opportunity to play in Puerto Rico," said Valdez. "I grew up watching the teams in the league, so it hasn't really hit me yet that I'm now getting the chance to play for one of them."

Players drafted ahead of Valdez include Renaldo Balkman, a former first round pick of the New York Knicks who has played in the NBA for six seasons. Also drafted was Mike Rosario, a starting guard at the University of Florida and an NBA prospect.

"As a program, we're extremely proud of Carlos," said Mount head coach Ryan Kadlubowski. "He has worked incredibly hard throughout his career and is very deserving of this opportunity. We all wish him the best of luck."

Valdez, a four-year standout at Mount Saint Mary College, became the first player in school history to record 1,000 career points and 1,000 career rebounds. He ranks fourth all-time in scoring at the College with 1,391 points and is the all-time leading rebounder with 1,046. A Skyline Conference first team selection and a D3hoops.com Atlantic Region second team selection as a senior, Valdez led the Knights to a program-best record of 23-7 and the school's first-ever ECAC Metro Region championship in 2011-12.
