Why will Bard's Adam Turner be coaching barefoot on Feb. 6?

Only basketball offers the opportunity to see a grown man jump up and down, scream at the top of his lungs, roll his eyes, grab his head with both hands, pirouette, plead from his knees, punch at the air, cover his eyes ... all while wearing a really nice suit.

When the Mount Saint Mary College men's basketball team visits Bard on Feb. 6, you'll see all of that. Plus, if you look closely, you'll notice that both head coaches are barefoot.

It's for charity.

Bard coach Adam Turner and Mount Saint Mary College coach Ryan Kadlubowski will be barefoot as part of a charity drive for Samaritan's Feet, an organization which raises money to give shoes to the 300 million people worldwide who don't have them.

"I first heard about the organization a few years ago when (Butler coach) Brad Stevens did it," Turner said. "Then when I was at the Final Four last year, they had a table set up and I started talking to them about doing it at Bard."

Samaritan's Feet is a non-profit organization founded by Emmanuel Ohonme in 2003. Their mission is to equip 10 million impoverished children with 10 million shoes in 10 years. Since beginning in 2003, Samaritan's Feet has helped 4 million people in 60 countries.  They also have partnerships with the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and SAAC (Student Athlete Advisory Committee).

"I reached out to (Kadlubowski) before the season, and he e-mailed me back right away," Turner said. "He was very enthusiastic about it, but he said he'd have to make sure to get his first-ever pedicure before the game."

Bard players have already been out in the local community, reaching out to local businesses for tax deductible donations. The Bard men's basketball program will likely raffle off gift certificates donated from those local merchants.

"We do a good job in the community locally," Turner said. "This program gave us a chance to make a different globally. We raise money, they buy shoes, and people get shoes. It's an organization with great values and a connection to basketball. It aligned perfectly for us."
