Hayes Leads Saints to a 73-64 Win at Grove City

(GROVE CITY, Pa.) - Junior point guard D'Carlo Hayes (Louisville, Ky./Male) scored a game-high 17 points to lead the Thomas More College men's basketball team to a 73-64 win over Grove City College today (Saturday, January 19, 2013) in a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) game at Grove City College Arena in Grove City, Pennsylvania.

With the win, the Saints improve to 15-8 overall and 8-1 in the PAC.  With the loss, the Wolverines fall to 6-11 overall and 3-6 in the PAC.

Thomas More took a 7-2 lead with 15:36 to play in the first half when junior power forward Josef Marshall (Dayton, Ohio/Trotwood Madison) made a lay-up.  Grove City answered with a 20-13 run capped by a Nate Rambacher lay-up to take a 22-20 lead with 7:49 to play in the opening half.  The Saints responded with a 14-2 run to take a 34-24 lead when Marshall made a lay-up with 3:45 to play in the half.  The Wolverines cut the lead to 34-29 with 2:57 to play in the half when Brian Giesler capped a 5-0 run with a three-pointer.  The Saints extend the lead to 36-29 at halftime when Hayes made two free-throws with 2:14 to play in the half.

Grove City opened the second half on a 5-0 run to cut the lead to 36-34 with 17:52 to play in the game when J.T. Schwartz made a jumper.  Thomas More answered with an 11-0 run to increase the lead to 47-34 when junior small forward Brandon Housley (Covington, Ky./Holmes) made one-of-two free-throws with 14:15 to play in the game.  The Wolverines used 22-14 run to cut the lead to 61-56 with 5:37 to play in the game when Schwartz made a three-pointer.  That would be as close as Grove City would come as Thomas More closed out the game on a 12-8 run for the 73-64 victory.

Joining Hayes in double-figure scoring was Housley and junior point guard Spencer Berlekamp (Cincinnati, Ohio/Kings) with 13 points each and sophomore shooting guard Drew Mumford (Louisville, Ky./Christian Academy) with 11 points.  Housley completed a double-double as he led the team on the boards with 11 rebounds, while also leading the team in assists with six.

The Saints have a conference bye on Wednesday (January 23) and are idle until next Saturday (January 26) when they host Waynesburg University at 3 p.m. at the Connor Convocation Center in Crestview Hills, Kentucky.
