COUGARS BEAT YORK 85-78 IN MEN'S BASKETBALL

Brooklyn, NY- The Medgar Evers College Men's Basketball Cougars defeated the York College Cardinals 85-78 on Wednesday January 16, 2013. The Cougars improve to 7-9 Overall and 3-4 CUNYAC while the Cardinals dropped to 7-9 Overall and 3-4 CUNYAC.

York led after the opening tip for a brief moment. The Cougars would tie the game at 2, on a layup from Sophomore Valin Williams, followed by a 3pt. shot from Sophomore Michael Taylor. The Cougars led the rest of the 1st half. They built their lead to 19pts at one point.

In the 2nd half, Medgar Evers College led for the first 6 minutes. York would regain the lead three times, after some miscues by the Cougars. York led 54-53, when Taylor made a layup, giving the Cougars a 55-54 with 9:06 left in the game. The Cougars led the rest of the game. Timely shots made and free throws converted help the Cougars improve to 3-4 in the conference.

In the win, Medgar Evers College was led by Sophomore Michael Taylor with 29pts (9-9 FT-FTA). Taylor who also scored 29pts on Monday night's win, grabbed 7 rebounds, tallied 3 assists, and 2 steals. Senior Guard and Captain Jovan Deare scored 20pts (10-10 FT-FTA), grabbed 7 rebounds, tallied 4 assists, a block, and a steal. Junior Guard Ricco Oliver scored 16pts (4-6 3pt. FG-FGA, 2-2 FT-FTA). Oliver grabbed 4 rebounds and tallied an assist. Senior Forward Winston Douglas scored 14pts (2-6 3pt. FG-FGA, 2-4 FT-FTA), grabbed 15 rebounds, tallied 2 blocks, and 2 steals. This was Douglas' 12th double-double of this season.

In the loss, York was led by Shamir WIlkinson with 22pts and Tony Vails with 21pts.

Medgar Evers College will be back in action on Friday January 18, 2013, when they play the Baruch College Bearcats. Game time is 8pm and can be seen on http://ustream.tv/channel/mecathletics
