DeVries-led Scots Use Second Half Surge in Win Over Crown

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- Jon DeVries scored a career-high 27 points and the Covenant men's basketball team outscored visiting Crown 41-26 in the second half to come away with a 78-65 victory on Wedensday afternoon on Lookout Mountain.

With the win, Covenant moves over the .500 mark for the season at 5-4. It is the first time since November of 2011 that the Scots are above .500. Crown drops to 4-5 on the year.

DeVries scored 11 points in the first half on 5-of-6 shooting, and continued his hot shooting in the second half as he poured in 16 points on 6-of-9 from the field. The senior also pulled down eight rebounds, including six offensive.

T.J. Cox added 11 points, all in the first half, and a team-high five assists, while Sam Bowman had 10 points and four rebounds. As a team, Covenant dished out a season-high 20 assists -- the most since February 11, 2011 when they had 21 against Rust -- on 32 made baskets. The Scots shot 45.7 percent (32-70) from the field.

Both teams went back-and-forth in the first twenty minutes of play. Covenant led 24-14 at the 9:32 mark of the first half off a Cox driving layup that capped a 12-0 scoring run. Crown would seize the lead by halftime, however, on a Truman Shetler jumper with just under two minutes left to give the Storm a 39-37 lead.

In the second half, Covenant started strong as baskets from Bowman and DeVries opened the period and gave the Scots a brief 41-39 lead. Trailing 53-51 with under 12 minutes remaining, Covenant would go on a 9-0 spurt, capped by a Jake Delaney 3-pointer, that gave them the lead for good. The Scots would lead by as many as 16 points late in the half.

Shetler led Crown with 15 points with Andy Harrel and Nick Krop tallying 12 points each. 7-foot-1 center Anthony DiLoreto registered a double-double with 11 points and 15 rebounds to go along with four blocked shots and three assists. The Storm made 46 percent (23-50) from the field and 9-of-18 from 3-point land.

Covenant forced Crown into 28 turnovers and the Scots converted those extra chances into 20 points. The Scots dominated the paint area as they scored 50 points, compared to 26 by Crown, around the hoop.

Covenant will be back in action on Friday at home in its first game of the Covenant College Classic against Johnson University at 7 p.m. That game will be preceded by Crown taking on Hiwassee at 5 p.m.
