#6 Whitewater Falls to Saint Norbert

More news about: UW-Whitewater

A glass half full description would be "both teams were probing, test each other". Saint Norbert led 22-21 at the half.  Both teams shot under 40% from the floor, both made just three, three point baskets, and the teams combined for four free throw attempts.  Whitewater, which had ten turnovers in Saturday's win over Northwestern, had nine in the first half.

Senior center Luke Knoble led UW-W with eight points, with junior guard Eric Bryson topping both teams with six rebounds and sophomore guard Quardell Young dishing four assists.  Junior guard Brandon Gries topped the Green Knights with eight points, with freshman center Izaiah Anderson contributing five boards.

Whitewater went up 27-22 early in the second half, and the lead seesawed until the 12:02 mark, when Young's tip in tied the score 35-35 at 12:02, the final tie in the contest.  An 11-4 stretch for SNC gave them a 46-39 cushion with 9:09 remaining, and by 6:04 the Green Knights had pushed the gap to 55-45.  Both teams went almost three minutes without scoring, but with UW-W trailing the clock was as much an enemy as the points.  The closest UW-W came in the remaining minutes was 57-49 on a three by Darnell Harris with 2:02 left, but Saint Norbert's margin was at least ten for the last 0:50 as UW-W was forced to rush shots on offense and foul on defense.

Saint Norbert's field goal shooting improved to 48% for the game.  Whitewater shot 41% from the floor.  UW-W went 6-21 from three point range and 9-14 from the line, while SNC was 5-9 and 15-25.  Both of those figures thrown off somewhat by UW-W's late game attempt to catch up with three's and slow the clock with fouls.  UW-W had 18 turnovers, a season high, and forced ten turnovers by the Green Knights, tying the season low for a Warhawk opponent (Stout 12/1).

Young was the game's leading scorer with 21 points, going 8-11 from the floor, while also leading both teams with four steals.  Knoble, with ten points, was the only other Warhawk in double figures.  Bryson shared game high honors with nine boards.  Gries led four Green Knights in double figures with 17 points, also contributing four steals.  Sophomore forward Andrew Schwoerer scored 15, and Anderson and reserve center Garrett Thorn had ten apiece.  Anderson shared game rebounding honors with Bryson with nine, and Saint Norbert point guard Austin Elliott passed off five assists without committing a turnover.

UW-Whitewater will host Cardinal Stritch College, 15-1, Wednesday, January 2 at 7:00 in Kachel Gym of Williams Center.
