YORK, Pa. – Senior Alex Zurn scored a game-high 22 points and was named tournament MVP, leading the Gettysburg College men's basketball team to a 74-64 victory over Grove City College in the championship game of the York (Pa.) College Coaches vs. Cancer Classic Saturday afternoon at Charles Wolf Gymnasium.

The Bullets (5-6) made the most of 31 Grove City fouls, shooting 34-for-47 at the charity stripe, including 23-for-32 in the second half. It was the most free throws made and attempted by Gettysburg since going 38-for-48 in a 76-69 win over Washington College on Dec. 7, 2002.

Zurn shot 13-for-14 at the foul line and iced the game by going 4-for-4 at the stripe over the final 10 seconds. He added six rebounds as the Bullets captured their first tournament title since winning the 2009 Albright College New Year's Tournament.

Gettysburg never trailed after opening the game on a 13-0 run and would lead by 16 at one point, but had to hold off several rallies by the Wolverines, who tied it in the second half.

Senior Derek Brooks added 13 points – including nine of the team's final 15 – for Gettysburg and was named to the all-tournament team along with Grove City's Mitch Marmelstein, York's Mitch Kemp, and Farmingdale State's AJ Matthews.

Farmingdale defeated York 70-61 in the championship game.

J.T. Schwartz led Grove City (2-8) with 12 points while Brian Giesler and Christian Durbin added 10 points apiece. Nate Rambacher grabbed 11 rebounds for the Wolverines.

Sophomore guard Sean Gordon added 11 points for the Bullets.

It was the 600th game coached by Gettysburg Head Coach George Petrie.

Teamwork was key in Gettysburg's game-opening run, as five different players scored during the spurt. After a Christian Bors hook shot made it 9-0, sophomore center Christian Healy scored on back-to-back lay-ups to make it 13-0.

Gettysburg reached its 16-point lead (24-8) with 10:29 left in the half after back-to-back 3-pointers from Gordon. But that's when Grove City put together a 10-2 run to pull to within single digits (26-18) with 7:07 on the clock.

The Wolverines cut it to six (34-28) following a Giesler 3-pointer with 1:42 left. However, Gettysburg closed the period on a 6-0 run – scoring all of its points on free throws – to assume a 40-28 halftime advantage.

Grove City pulled even (41-41) with 14:00 to go after starting the second half on a 13-1 run. A 10-0 surge upped the Bullets lead to 55-44, but the Wolverines refused to go away, this time with a 10-1 run that made it 56-54 with 6:13 to go.

It was a 58-56 game with 5:21 left but that's as close as Grove City would get. The Bullets scored 18 of their final 22 points at the foul line, with Zurn going 8-for-8 during the stretch. The Wolverines trailed 68-64 after two Schwartz foul shots with 20 seconds left but committed a turnover and missed a 3-pointer on their final two possessions.
