ASHLAND, Va. – The Manhattanville men's basketball team closed the game with a 21-5 run over the final 6:18 of the second half to emerge with a 74-58 win over Frostburg State in the first round of the Randolph-Macon Coaches Classic sponsored by Kay Jewelers, hosted by Randolph-Macon College on Saturday afternoon at Crenshaw Gym.

Manhattanville (7-4) advances to tomorrow's championship round, where they will play the winner of today's second game between Randolph-Macon and Washington (Mo.) at 3 p.m. Frostburg State (4-8) will play the loser of Randolph-Macon and Washington in the consolation game at 1 p.m.

Junior Jack Bramswig (Pleasantville, N.Y./Pleasantville) notched his seventh double-double of the year and third in a row to lead the Valiants, posting team highs of 22 points, 13 rebounds and a career-high-tying five assists. Classmate Colin Campbell (Miami, Fla./LaSalle) had a great game with 18 points on 8-of-14 shooting, while freshman Anthony Maestre (Bronx, N.Y./Mount St. Michael Academy) added 14 and graduate student Craig Augustine (Citrus, Fla./Citrus) chipped in nine as the five Valiant starters combined for 66 points.

Frostburg State's Christian Jackson led all players with 32 points, hitting 12-of-26 shots from the field before fouling out late in the game, but he was the only Bobcat in double figures.

For Manhattanville, all the action happened in the second half, as the Valiants rebounded from a sub-par first frame to overcome a five-point halftime deficit and put away the Bobcats.

The Valiants made up their deficit in the first two minutes of the second half, as a three-pointer from sophomore Wills Flynn (Miami, Fla./Westminster Christian) and an old-fashioned three-point play from Campbell gave the squad its first lead since 2-0 at 33-32. In all, Manhattanville went on a 17-6 run to open the half, with Bramswig capping the run with a three-pointer to make it 44-38 with 13:30 left.

The Bobcats and Valiants continued to battle until the score was tied at 53 with 6:18 to go. At that time, Manhattanville finally seized control of the game, outscoring the Bobcats by 16 points the rest of the way to emerge with the win.

The momentum started with a 9-2 Valiant run, led by five straight points from Maestre that made it 62-55 with 3:57 left. Two free throws from freshman Andrew Winter (Fresh Meadows, N.Y./St. Francis Prep) and a layup by Campbell continued the run, giving the squad its first double-digit lead of the game at 66-56 with less than three minutes to go.

Campbell (five) and Bramswig (three) increased the lead to a game-high 18 entering the final minute of play, allowing the Valiants to empty their bench late and celebrate the victory.

Manhattanville was a very efficient 57.1 percent (16 of 28) from the field in the second half to pull out the win, finishing the afternoon shooting at a 45.0 percent (27 for 60) clip overall. The team also shot very well from beyond the arc (5 for 8) and from the line (10 of 12) over the final 20 minutes.

The Valiants went into the intermission with just a five-point deficit at 32-27, despite shooting 34.4 percent (11 of 32) from the field. The team also struggled from beyond the arc (0 for 6) and from the free-throw line (5 for 13), but the team also did well defending the three-point line and kept the Bobcats to 2-of-15 shooting from downtown in the first 20 minutes.

Manhattanville scored the first bucket of the game on a layup from Augustine, but the Valiants were held to only one field goal over the next five minutes as the Bobcats jumped out to an early 13-5 lead.

The Frostburg State lead grew to 12 points with 9:08 gone by on a jumper by Jackson, who hit seven of his first 11 shots from field and had 17 of his team's first 26 points to help his team to the early advantage.

Part of the Valiants' first-half struggles was the inability to get Bramswig and Maestre going. The junior forward did not make his first basket until 7:54 remained in the first half, while Maestre did not register his first points until over 14:30 had gone by, sinking a pair of free throws to make it a 26-19 FSU lead with 5:29 left in the half.

Despite some early struggles, Bramswig led the team with eight points and six rebounds at the break, followed by Campbell with six points and Augustine with five. Jackson had a game-high 21 points on 8-of-14 shooting over the first 20 minutes.
