Keuka Knocks Off Defending NEAC Champion Morrisville State

More news about: Keuka

The Keuka College men's basketball team had been close to recording its first win of the 2012-13 season on several occasions, but came up short each time.

Until Wednesday night, when an outstanding defensive effort, along with clutch free throw shooting, propelled the Storm past the defending North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) champions from Morrisville State.

Sophomore Trevor Healey (Wethersfield, CT/Wethersfield) recorded his first career double-double and four members of Keuka College's men's basketball team reached double-figures in scoring as Keuka knocked off Morrisville State, 59-50 Wednesday night inside a raucous Weed Physical Arts Center.

Healey scored a career-high 12 points and snared a career-best 10 rebounds, while senior Teddy Tuggles (Rochester, NY/Gates Chili) added 11 points, 6 rebounds and 3 assists for Keuka (1-5, 1-0 NEAC), which never trailed against the Mustangs (3-4, 0-1).

"We just had more intensity. We knew going in that this was an important game, they won the conference last year, so we knew we had to come out and play hard and not let up," Tuggles said after Keuka snapped an 11-game losing streak.

"We closed the game out today and it feels great to get this win. But we can't let this one win get to our heads; we need to stay composed and keep focused on our goals. Even though we lost our first five games, we knew once conference play came, that's what matters the most and that's what we're trying to do, make a move in the conference and this is a good start."

Sophomore Jared Wagner (Pittsford, NY/McQuaid) scored a season-high 13 points with six rebounds while classmate Tyler Hixson (Shortsville, NY/Red Jacket) added 10 points and three rebounds for Keuka, which out-rebounded Morrisville 43-30 in the win.

"Our offense and our defense has gotten so much better and we're really playing well as a team," said Healey after making his first start of the season.

"Teddy switched positions, this is his third game playing point guard for us and he's playing like he's done this his whole life. We're coming together very nicely and by the time the season's over we should be a very good team."

Sophomore Adam Starks (Wellsville, NY/Andover) added 8 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals as the Green and Gold limited a potent Morrisville State offense that came in averaging 79.3 points per game to 29 points below its season average.

Tuggles swished a '3', Healey knocked down a jumper and Starks made a layup as Keuka started on a 7-0 run. The lead swelled to 17-8 on a three-point play from Healey with 9:17 remaining in the first, and after Wagner made all three free throws after being fouled on a '3', Healey made a layup for a 23-13 lead with 6:05 remaining in the half.

Keuka's biggest lead of the half came when Wagner drained a '3' with 46 seconds left in the half, but Jailaan Kinsey made a '3' on the ensuing possession as the Storm took a 30-22 halftime lead.

Healey made two layups while Starks knocked down his only triple of the game as Keuka opened the second on a 7-0 run. Morrisville answered with a 9-0 run to pull within 37-31 with 12:55 remaining.

After Jordan Prior connected on his only '3' of the game, the Mustangs pulled even at 47, the first tie of the contest. Hixson made a layup and Starks drained a pair of free throws to put the Storm ahead 51-47 with 2:47 remaining in regulation.

Following an over-and-back violation on Morrisville, Tuggles drove the lane, was fouled and completed the three-point play for a 54-47 lead. Wagner and Healey both made a pair of free throws to finish off the Mustangs.

Brandon Hanks had 11 points while Kinsey and Kucjok Ater each had 10 for the Mustangs, who scored 29 points below their season average thanks to an aggressive 2-3 zone defense from the Green and Gold.

"Our 2-3 worked really well today, we knew we had to sag in and double-down on (Kucjok Ater), not let him going since they run their offense through him and we kept him contained and that really helped us out," Tuggles said after Ater shot 3-for-7 while Morrisville shot 30.4 percent (17-for-56) as a team

Keuka shot 40.4 percent (19-for-47), 40.7 percent in the first half and 40 percent for the second half.

The Storm travel to SUNY Cobleskill for a 3 p.m. NEAC contest Saturday afternoon before competing in the RIT Harold J. Brodie Tournament, Dec. 14-15.
