Cortland Men Improve to 5-0 With 68-55 Win vs. Plattsburgh

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Junior Kevin McMahon and senior Harrison Hefele each scored 15 points and senior Jeremy Smith added 13 points as Cortland remained perfect on the season with a 68-55 win over Plattsburgh.

The Red Dragons improved to 5-0 overall and 2-0 in the SUNYAC. Cortland is off to its best start since a school-record 7-0 opening to the 1963-64 campaign and a 5-0 beginning to the 1953-54 season. Plattsburgh is now 4-2 overall and 1-1 in the league.

McMahon made 7-of-9 shots from the field and also led all players with 11 rebounds and three blocked shots. Hefele hit 6-of-11 shots, including a pair of three-pointers. Smith also made two treys, dished out four assists and grabbed a career-best seven rebounds. Smith is 15 points shy of becoming the 21st Cortland player to reach 1,000 career points.

Also for the Red Dragons, senior Jesse Winter finished with nine points and three assists, junior Lamard Herron scored eight points and senior Brian Manning  registered seven points, five assists and three steals.

Shamoy McIntosh led the Cardinals with 17 points and Gary Tibbs made 5-of-6 shots in a 10-point effort. Chris Manning led the team with nine rebounds and five assists and John Perez totaled seven points and seven rebounds.

Cortland held Plattsburgh to 33 percent shooting from the field, including 20 percent (5-of-25) from three-point range. The Red Dragons connected on 44 percent of their shots, with 32 percent accuracy (7-of-22) from the three-point arc.

Cortland led 36-26 at halftime, but Plattsburgh drew back to within three with an 11-4 run in the first four minutes of the second half. The Red Dragons answered with seven straight points on baskets by Smith, McMahon and Herron, along with a Smith free throw, to re-gain a 10-point lead with 11:26 left.

Plattsburgh was within seven after a Mike Mitchell three-pointer with 9:22 left, but a Hefele basket and two Manning three-pointers pushed Cortland's advantage to 15 with 7:22 remaining. Cortland's lead never dropped below double-figures from that point.

Cortland will play at Geneseo on Tuesday, Dec. 4, at 8 p.m. in a SUNYAC contest.
