Box Score SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – DeWayne Wynn scored 12 points off the bench – including the game-winning lay-in with 7 seconds left – to lift host Western New England University to a thrilling 68-67 victory Wednesday in Commonwealth Coast Conference men's basketball action at the Alumni Healthful Living Center. The Golden Bears won their first game of the season in four starts while the Fighting Scots fall to 1-2 overall in the CCC opener for both schools.

Wynn, a freshman, stole the ball from Park Thomas for a Gordon turnover near mid-court and drove the other way for the decisive basket. He also chipped in three steals.

Thomas led a balanced offense for Gordon with a game-high 16 points, followed by Luke Hamilton with 13 and reserves Shaun Roach and Jason Dempsey had 10 apiece.

Senior co-captain Damon Alston also scored 12 points on 4-of-6 shooting for the Golden Bears.

Both teams put on a 3-point clinic as Gordon made 7 of 13 beyond the arc for 53.8 percent while Western New England converted 5 of 7 treys for a season-high 71.4 clip. The Golden Bears also set a season-high with a .473 percentage, making 26 of 55 field goals.

It was a closely contested game as neither team led by more than six points. There were seven ties and eight lead changes. Western New England's bench outscored Gordon, 26-20, and also enjoyed a 14-8 advantage off turnovers.

Thomas and Hans Miersma, who both had seven rebounds, helped the Fighting Scots lead the battle of the boards, 33 to 29. Western New England freshman Zack Askew led all players with a career-best 10 rebounds.

The Golden Bears also did an effective job protecting the basketball, evidenced by a 2 to 1 assist-to-turnover ratio that included a season-low eight turnovers compared to 15 assists on 26 field goals.
