ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. Just like a season ago, Elizabethtown has already been in its fair share of games that have come down to the final few possessions. Sunday one of those games went its way, as Ben Cable's buzzer-beating jumper from the left elbow gave the Blue Jays a 66-64 win over Susquehanna at Thompson Gymnasium.

One of the Jays more heavily relied upon scoring options, Cable went to the locker room with four points on 2-of-4 shooting. His team still maintained a 27-26 lead, however. In the second half, everything changed. The York native erupted for 17 points, knocking down shots all over the court. He finished with 21 points, matching his younger brother, Luke, of Susquehanna, for game-high honors.

Susquehanna (1-3) trailed by two after Phil Wenger hit 1-of-2 at the foul line with 20 seconds left. Crusader guard Jake Eskin then forced his way into the paint on SU's final offensive possession and dropped in two points to tie the game with eight seconds to go.

Cable took the ball the length of the court and pulled up at the left elbow where he tried to initiate contact with SU's Mark Kukoda. The bump didn't draw a whistle, but the ball found the square on the backboard and banked in as time expired for an exhilarating first win this season by the Blue and Gray.

Earlier in the second half, Susquehanna's offense put E-town (1-3) in danger of its first 0-4 start since 1981-82. Luke Cable scored 10 points, while J.T. Wilson hit a pair of 3-pointers as the Crusaders opened the second half on an 18-9 run to lead 44-36 with 12:46 to play.

A few times in the final 10 minutes, Elizabethtown would get close only to have Luke Cable respond with a bucket. First, Phil Wenger (eight points) laid one in for the Jays to bring them back within one, 46-45, at the 7:37 mark. Cable hit a jumper next time down for SU. Will Schlosser drilled a three from the right corner on E-town's next possession to tie the game for the fifth time, but again, Luke Cable came back with three more points of his own 16 seconds later.

Big brother Ben would not allow his brother to upstage him Sunday afternoon, however. E-town's senior guard flipped the game 180-degrees in the Jays' favor by scoring 10 straight points to give the home team a 58-51 lead with under four minutes left.

When it wasn't Luke Cable doing the scoring for Susquehanna, the Crusaders got production from Wilson, who had a monster second half. He delivered back-to-back 3-pointers to reduce Elizabethtown's lead to one, 58-57, before Ben Cable drained his third trey of the half to extend the lead back to four. Wilson finished the half 5-of-9 from the floor and 2-of-2 at the line for all 17 of his points. All five shots he made came from 3-point land.

For the second game in a row, Lee Eckert took care of business for E-town in the post. Eckert, coming off his first career double-double last Tuesday at Lebanon Valley, had another one Sunday with 11 rebounds and 10 points. Joe Schwalm added 12 points for the Blue Jays, who closed within one win of tying their all-time series record with the Crusaders. SU now holds a 70-69 advantage in 139 meetings.

Joe Renzi and Steve Ennis each handed out three dimes in the victory for EC. The Crusaders' Mike Preillo had game-highs of seven assists and six steals to supplement a 12-point afternoon. He was the third of three SU players in double figures, points-wise, joining Luke Cable and Wilson.

E-town won the battle in the paint, 32-20, held an advantage on points off turnovers, 23-15 and edged the Crusaders in second-chance points, 7-4. The Jays also controlled the glass by nine, 35-26, while shooting a season-best 48.1 percent (25-of-52).

The Blue Jays will be back on the road Wednesday night at Widener. Tip-off against the Pride is scheduled for 8 p.m.
