Trine Finishes 1-1 at Heidelberg Tourny

TIFFIN, Ohio - The Trine University men's basketball team finished 1-1 at the Heidelberg Alumni Tournament as they fell to host Heidelberg 80-77 on November 16 before rebounding to defeat Akron-Wayne Community College 100-75.

In their season-opener, the Thunder trailed by just one, 34-33 at the half despite not allowing Heidelberg to reach the free throw line. Trine would hit 51.7 percent from the field in the second half, but the Student Princes would not be out-done on their home court, shooting 56 percent from the floor.

Senior Ian Jackson (Indianapolis, Ind./Perry Meridian) led all scorers with 33 points on 13-of-21 shooting and tying a team-high with six boards. Fellow senior Scott Rogers (Waterford, Mich./Kettering) scored 14 points on the night and pulling down five rebounds. Freshman Jared Holmquist (Reed City, Mich./Reed City) matched Jackson with six rebounds while adding in five points.

In the consolation game, the Thunder built a 20-point halftime lead over Akron-Wayne 51-31 en-route to the victory.

Five different players scored in double-figures for the Thunder led by freshman Nick Tatu (Clarkston, Mich./Clarkston) with a game-high 23 points. Jackson added 16 points and a game-high five steals. Rogers scored 14 points while transfers sophomore Jake Bagley (Van Wert, Ohio/Van Wert) and junior Todd Watkins (Cincinnati, Ohio/St. Bernard) each added in 11 points.  

Trine will compete in the two-day MIAA/HCAC Challenge which begins November 24 with the Thunder first taking on the host Earlham at 4:00 p.m.
