Maritime athletic director Heather MacCulloch is pleased to
announce the hiring of Jake Scott as the new men's basketball coach
for the Privateers for the upcoming 2012-13 season. Scott will also
serve as the head coach for the men's and women's cross country
teams.
He replaces Dick Hack, who coached the Privateers to a 10-40 record (.200) in two seasons. Hack, who was also the school's athletic director, had replaced Jody King, who went 47-35 in three seasons.
"I am excited to welcome Jake Scott to Maritime College
Athletics and the Privateer family," commented MacCulloch. "He
brings a wealth of enthusiasm and motivation and is highly
committed to moving our program forward. I am confident he will be
a great asset to us and will achieve success here at Maritime
College."
Scott comes to Maritime after spending the last three seasons as
an assistant basketball coach at Rochester Tech.
At RIT, Scott was responsible for planning team practices and also
implemented a new off-season training program for the
student-athletes. He also helped the basketball program by scouting
and recruiting student-athletes. Scott has coached four all-Liberty
League players: Justin Heisig, Scott Young, Anthony Terry and
Brendan Harder.
After earning his bachelor's degree in sport studies from St. John
Fisher in 2005, Scott became a graduate assistant coach at Division
I Virginia Commonwealth, under current Duke assistant coach Jeff
Capel. Scott developed scouting reports and helped in the
recruiting aspect. In 2006, Scott earned his master's degree from
VCU in sport leadership.
Later in 2006, Scott became the junior varsity head coach at Atlee
High School in Mechanicsville, Va. The following season, he earned
the head varsity basketball coaching and athletic director
positions at nearby Amelia Academy. He coached the squad to an
18-10 record and a second-place finish in the Virginia Commonwealth
Conference and earned a quarterfinal appearance in the VISAA State
Playoffs.
"I am truly honored to have this opportunity to coach at SUNY
Maritime," said Scott. "I want to thank Ms. MacCulloch and Admiral
Carpenter for giving me the chance to lead these two great
programs. Maritime is a special place with a great faculty and
staff and a student body full of impressive young adults. I look
forward to developing a basketball program with a strong defensive
focus combined with detailed offensive execution. The opportunity
to coach the men's and women's cross country program also comes
with great excitement."
An avid runner, Scott has also competed in numerous running events
at the 10K, 15K and half marathon distance. He currently resides in
Manhattan, N.Y.
