NEWBURGH, N.Y. - Seniors Kevin Milella (Floral Park, N.Y.) and Carlos Valdez (Carolina, Puerto Rico) each totaled 18 points and eight rebounds as third-seeded Mount Saint Mary College went on to an 84-52 victory over the sixth-seeded College of Mount Saint Vincent on Tuesday night in the Kaplan Center. The win for the Knights (20-6) is the first in the playoffs since the 2005-06 season.
The Knights scored 16 of the game's first 19 points and a fastbreak layup from Valdez at the 13:30 mark made it 16-3. Mount Saint Vincent would creep back to within seven, but the Mount closed the half on a 10-0 run and led 41-20 at the break. Mount Saint Mary kicked off the second half with a 7-0 and went unchallenged for the rest of the way. They would push the lead to as many as 35 before settling in for the 32-point win.
Milella was excellent, hitting on 7-of-7 from the field and totaling two assists, two blocks, and two steals to go along with his 18 points and eight rebounds. Valdez shot 8-of-12 from the field and added five assists to his effort. His first rebound of the contest gave him 1,000 career rebounds, making him the first player in school history to record 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds.
Sophomore Joe Stabach (Staten Island, N.Y.) also reached double figures with 10 points, while juniors Ryan Straub (Massapequa, N.Y.) andLenny Ragaglia (Staten Island, N.Y.) each finished with nine points.
Freshman D'Andre McPhatter (Bronx, N.Y.) and junior Shaquille Cunningham (Brooklyn, N.Y.) each scored 12 points to lead the Dolphins. Cunningham shot just 5-of-15 from the field and committed seven turnovers.
The Knights shot 54.4-percent from the field while limiting Mount Saint Vincent to just 32.8-percent. Both teams had 17 turnovers.
The win also completed the first 20-win season for head coach Ryan Kadlubowski.
Mount Saint Mary heads to second-seeded Farmingdale State College for a semifinal game on Thursday at 8:00 p.m.
