St. John's pulls away to top Macalester 63-53

Leading by a single point at 49-48 with 4:41 to play, St. John's began a game-deciding 9-0 run and went on to turn a very close battle into a 63-53 MIAC win over Macalester at the Leonard Center.  The game featured 12 lead changes and eight ties.

 

Justin Wasik (So., Park Ridge, Ill. / Maine South) just missed out on a double-double to help lead the Macalester cause, posting 14 points and a career-best nine rebounds.

 

Pierce Peters (Jr., Glenwood, Minn. / Minnewaska Area) netted 15 of his game-high 17 points in the second half and also blocked a pair of shots, and Sam Marshall (Jr., Sun Prairie, Wis.) helped lead the Scots in the paint by collecting 10 points and eight boards.  Hans Erickson (Fy., La Crosse, Wis. / Logan) distributed the ball for six assists (he has 17 in Mac's last three games).

 

The Johnnies (14-10 / 10-9 MIAC) keep their hopes alive for an MIAC playoff bid.  SJU, Bethel and Hamline are all 10-9 and two of the three will make the post-season.  Seth Marx pumped in 16 points to lead the charge, while Aaron Barmore added 15.

 

Macalester (1-23 / 1-18 MIAC) close out the '11-12 campaign when they host Snelling Ave. neighbor Hamline Saturday (Feb. 18) at 3 p.m.  On Senior Day, Macalester will honor its lone senior, forward Patrick Piepkorn (Sauk Rapids, Minn. / Sauk Rapids-Rice).
