Trine Picks Up Big Win Over Calvin

ANGOLA, Ind. - A big second half for the Trine University men's basketball team helped them rally to beat Calvin College 73-54. The Thunder improve to 15-9 on the year and 8-5 in the MIAA.

Trine jumped out to an early lead, scoring the first six points of the game. The Knights were able to finally score just under four minutes into the game as they rallied to score six unanswered points. Calvin would continue to make a run as they built a six point lead with five minutes to go in the half. Senior Tim Pearcy (Vicksburg, Mich./Vicksburg) converted on the and-one opportunity with 16 seconds to go in the half to pull Trine within one. Calvin was fouled on a three pointer as time expired, but was only able to convert on one of the free throws.

Trine opened the second half out-scoring Calvin 8-4 to take the lead at 36-34. That would be as close as the Knight would be the rest of the way as the Thunder rolled over the next six minutes going on a 19-6 run. From there the Trine defense never allowed the Knights to go on any type of run as the Thunder forced turnovers and controlled the game in the paint.

Junior Ian Jackson (Indianapolis, Ind./Perry Meridian) led all scorers with 23 points while also grabbing four boards and dishing out three assists. Pearcy scored 18 points on Senior Night while pulling down six rebounds and swatting away two shots. Junior Scott Rogers (Waterford, Mich./Kettering) picked up his sixth career double-double with 17 points and a game-high 11 rebounds while picking off three steals and knocking away two shots. Sophomore Chris Kent (Angola, Ind./Angola) dished out a season-high 10 assists while scoring seven points and picking up five rebounds. Freshman Braden Knight (Bedford, Ind./Bedford North Lawrence) scored eight points and picking up a game-high four steals.

Trine shot an outstanding 61 percent (17-for-28) in the second half, finishing the night hitting 50 percent (28-for-56) from the floor. Calvin finished the game making 21-of-53 (39.6 percent) from the field. The Thunder forced 22 Knights turnovers, the most they've had in conference play this season. Trine had a remarkable 27 points off turnovers for the game compared to just nine for the Knights. The Thunder dominated in the paint, out-scoring Calvin 42-to-20.

The win for Trine, marks just the second time they have defeated the Knights since joining the MIAA, the other came at home in January of 2007. The 10 assists by Kent are the most by a Trine player since Deon Thompson dished out 12 against Hope on February 21, 2009.

Trine will wrap-up the regular season as they travel to Hope, the conference regular season champions, on February 18 for a 7:30 p.m. game.
