Thomas More Defeats Saint Vincent, 81-71, In Regular Season Finale

(CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky.) - The Thomas More College men's basketball team defeated Saint Vincent College, 81-74, in its regular season finale tonight (Wednesday, February 15, 2012) at the Connor Convocation Center in Crestview Hills, Kentucky.

With the win, the Saints improve to 18-7 overall and 13-3 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC).  With the loss, the Bearcats fall to 18-6 overall and 11-4 in the PAC.

Thomas More jumped out to an early 15-5 lead when senior shooting guard Todd Krohman (Florence, Ky./Boone County) made a three-pointer with 15:39 to play in the first half.  Saint Vincent used a 32-11 run to build a 37-26 lead with 26-seconds to play in the half when Armani Fountain made a lay-up.  Senior point guard Daniel Whelan (Cincinnati, Ohio/St. Xavier) made three free-throws with 12-seconds to play in the half to cut the Bearcats' halftime lead to 37-29.

Saint Vincent opened the second half on a 10-4 run to extend the lead to 47-33 on a Fountain three-point play with 16:05 to play in the game.  Thomas More responded with an 8-0 run to cut the lead to 47-41 when senior center Colt Stafford (Groveport, Ohio/Bishop Hartley) made two free-throws with 13:31 to play in the game.  The Bearcats answered with a 6-2 run to extend the lead to 53-43 with 12:08 to play in the game when Chris Klimchock made a three-pointer.  The Saints came right back with a 24-10 run to take a 67-63 lead with 6:10 to play in the game when junior small forward Phil Feinberg (Tempe, Ariz./Corona Del Sol) made two free-throws.  Saint Vincent responded with a 5-0 run to retake the lead at 68-67 on a Dillon Stitch dunk with 5:15 to play in the game.  Thomas More answered with a 6-0 run to take a 73-68 lead with 3:55 to play in the game when junior shooting guard Ross Renken (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) made a lay-up.  The Bearcats responded with a 6-0 run capped by a Dennis Bassich three-pointer to take a 74-73 lead with 2:07 to play in the game.  The Saints closed out the game on an 8-0 run for the 81-74 victory.

Stafford led four Saints in double-figure scoring with 18 points.  Joining him in double-figures was Whelan and Krohman with 11 points each and Feinberg with 10.  Stafford and Feinberg led the team on the boards as they each had seven rebounds, while Renken and Whelan led the team in assists with four each.

The Saints are idle until next Tuesday (February 21) when they host a PAC Tournament quarterfinal round game at the Connor Convocation Center.  The time and opponent will be announced on Saturday (February 18) by the PAC office at www.pacathletics.org.
