Hot-Shooting Eagles Defeat Hood Men, 77-46

FREDERICK, Md.--The Hood College men's basketball team (13-10, 5-9 CAC) fell to the visiting University of Mary Washington Eagles (16-6, 11-2 CAC), 77-46, Wednesday in a Capital Athletic Conference contest at BB&T Arena.

The first-place Eagles used scorching perimeter shooting, sinking 11 three-point baskets, and connected on 55.4 percent of its shots from the field on the night. UMW's Ryan Farrar had the hot hand, draining 7-of-10 from downtown for a game-high 21 points.

Despite the setback, the Blazers remain in seventh place in the CAC standings and in contention for a playoff berth since the team one spot ahead of them, the Salisbury University Sea Gulls, came up short on the road at second-place St. Mary's College (Md.), 59-42.

The Eagles claimed a 31-23 advantage after the first 20 minutes and continued to pour it on in the second half. UMW drilled nine of its first 10 shots in the first seven minutes, including four from long range, to assume a 53-34 lead and the Blazers were unable to recover.

Cameron Cook knocked down three triples of his own for a team-high 12 points while Lavar Rich chipped in 10 points. Ramon Smith netted eight points and Brenden Straughn and Justin Stone contributed five apiece.

UMW's Walt Smith registered a double-double with 10 points and 10 assists.

Hood closes out its regular season home slate Saturday against ninth-place Marymount University (5-17, 1-12 CAC) at 4 p.m. The Blazers will recognize seniors Rich, Smith and Straughn prior to tip-off.
