Reading, Pa. (Feb. 4, 2012) - Senior guard Stefan Thompson (Philadelphia, PA/G.A.M.P) netted a career high 30 points hitting a single-game record eight 3s to help Alvernia University (15-6, 6-4) to a 63-61 win over Lebanon Valley College (10-11, 3-7) Saturday afternoon in Commonwealth Conference men's basketball action at the Physical Education Center.

Thompson opened the game on fire as he hit his first three tries from 3-point range to get the home crowd buzzing. He finished the first half with seven 3's and 23 points.

Despite Thompson's dominate performance, Alvernia only led by 10 at the half. The Crusaders struggled from the line hitting only 60 percnet of their free throws and shot just 39 percnet from the field. Their lack of offensive consistency kept the game close for the majority of the game even though they led for all 40 minutes.

Several times the Dutchmen rallied to pull close to their opponents but each effort was denied. With 12 minutes remaining in the game, Danny Brooks scored back to back layups for the Dutchmen and LVC trailed by just one point. Seconds later Thompson answered back on the other side of the court with one of his 8 3-point shots.

With just four minutes remaining, the Crusaders clung to a 3-point lead and were able to close out the contest on top.

Alvernia's five starters carried the team on both sides of the ball as they received only four points off the bench. Senior forward Brian Nerney (Middletown, NJ/Red Bank Catholic) scored seven and had a career-high 15 boards while junior guard Josh Vargas (Allentown, PA/Faith Christian Academy) added 11 points of his own.

Thompon's 8-of-12 from 3-point land tied a school record for 3s in a game held by Ray Strickland and Chris Alba.

Alvernia is back in action on Wednesday when they take on local rival Albright College.
