FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The Salisbury University men's basketball team connected on 10 free throws in 12 chances over the final 137 seconds to hold on for a 61-57 win against the University of Mary Washington, the top team in the Capital Athletic Conference.

Salisbury led 29-21 at halftime and pushed that advantage to 16 points early in the second half, but the Eagles were able to chip away. After Mary Washington (15-6, 10-2 CAC) cut the Sea Gull advantage to just two points with less than three minutes to play, senior Mike Maczko came up with a steal and converted two free throws at the other end to put Salisbury up 53-49 with 2:17 left in the game.

Maczko added two more free throws on his next chance at the charity stripe and classmate Mike Atkins hit three out of four to put the Gulls (12-9, 5-7 CAC) up 58-52 with 22 seconds left.

The Eagles would get within one possession after Bradley Reister hit a three-pointer with 8.5 seconds showing on the clock to cut the Salisbury lead to two, but senior Devin Posey was true on two efforts from the free-throw line to seal the victory.

Junior Trent Epps came off the bench to score a game-high 15 points while pulling down 12 rebounds for his first double-double. Maczko scored 13, including going 8-of-11 from the free-throw line. Salisbury was 19-of-25 (76 percent) on free throws in the contest.

After Taylor Johnson opened the game with a three for Mary Washington, Salisbury put together a 10-2 run, going up by five and never trailed again. The Sea Gull lead grew to 10 points midway through the half on a layup by Epps, who would score 11 of his points in the first 20 minutes.

Reister finished with a dozen and Taylor added 11 points to lead Mary Washington.

The Sea Gulls will be back in action on Wednesday, Feb. 7, traveling to St. Mary's (Md.) College. The game is scheduled to begin at 8 p.m.
