Gwynedd-Mercy Too Much For Mighty Macs

GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- Gwynedd-Mercy defeated Immaculata Saturday afternoon 80-62 to win their third consecutive league game. The Griffins were led by Frank Champion who scored 16 points and pulled down nine rebounds.

Champion was 8-of-11 from the floor and was one carom shy of his fifth double-double of the season. Senior Dan DelConte led all scorers with 19 points and added five assists. Senior Brandon Sharp added 12 while junior Doug Berzins chipped in 10.

Champion opened the scoring in the first half with an alley-oop dunk on an assist from Justin Knight on the first possession of the game.  The Griffins (13-8, 8-6 CSAC) forced twelve Immaculata turnovers in the first half and capitalized by scoring twenty three points on the other end of the floor. Gwynedd put together a 16-3 run in the first half to stretch it to a 36-21 advantage with less than five minutes remaining in the half.  The Mighty Macs cut into the lead but the Griffins took excellent care of the basketball only committing three first half turnovers to take a 41-30 edge into the break.

Immaculata (6-15, 4-10 CSAC) would chip away in the second half, cutting the lead to seven (59-52) with under nine minutes remaining. However the Griffins shot 68.4% in the second stanza and would respond with a 21-10 run to close out the game.

The Griffins shot 49.0% (25-of-51) for the game knocking down six three pointers and connecting on 24-of-29 free throws. Gwynedd held the Mighty Macs to 47.4% (20-of-47) shooting and forced eighteen turnovers. Todd Stokley led Immaculata with 12 points, with Nelson Torres and Rob Siter each adding 11.

Gwynedd outrebounded Immaculata 31-27.  Sharp, Berzins, and Knights each pulled down four caroms apiece. Rob Siter grabbed six boards to lead the Mighty Macs.

The Griffins now venture on the road traveling north on Monday to Keystone for a 7 p.m. tip-off.
