Carleton pulls away from Macalester

More news about: Macalester

Macalester led for nearly the entire first half and was on top by a point with 5:04 to play, but the Carleton Knights out-scored their guests 18-8 the rest of the way to escape with a 73-64 win over the Scots in Northfield.  The Knights avenge a defeat to the Scots in St. Paul earlier this season as Macalester's bid for a season sweep over Carleton falls short.

Sam Marshall (Jr., Sun Prairie, Wis.) posted his third 20-point effort for the Scots and led the way with 21 points to go along with six rebounds.  He helped Mac gain a 38-26 advantage in points in the paint.

Pierce Peters (Jr., Glenwood, Minn. / Minnewaska Area), who reached the 1,000-point career scoring milestone two nights ago, added 16 points and Bert Yaffe (Fy., Bethesda, Md. / Walter Johnson) pumped in a season-best 13.  Yaffe made all four shot attempts and went 3-for-3 on three-point tries.

Macalester shot 50% from the floor and only turned the ball over a season-low seven times, but a 5-for-15 free throw shooting performance and a 12-for-29 Carleton three-point shooting night (41%) were too much to overcome.

The Scots went up 7-6 on a three-pointer, led the rest of the opening period, and were up 33-26 at the halftime break.  Carleton chipped away at the lead and tied things up 37-37 at the 15:23 mark, and at 11:10 was leading 49-40 on another three-pointer.  Mac, however, responded with a 9-2 run to deadlock the score at 49-49    The contest remained closed until Carleton's closing run.

The Knights were paced by Scott Theisen with 23 points and five assists.  Tom Sawatzke added 16 points and combined with Theisen to go 9-for-19 from behind the arc.  Caleb Rosenow scored 15 and pulled down seven boards.  Carleton had 23 assists, with four players collecting at least four.

The Scots will look to bounce back from this tough defeat when they take on St. Mary's Saturday (Feb. 4) in Winona.
