Brooklyn Tops Medgar Evers, 87-77

Brooklyn, NY --- The Brooklyn College Men's Basketball team swept the season series against borough and City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) South Division rival Medgar Evers College, with an 87-77 victory tonight at the Cougars Cave.

The Bulldogs defeated the Cougars, the reigning CUNYAC Champions, 84-79 back on November 29th at the West Quad Center.

With the win, BC improves to 13-7 overall on the season and 6-3 in the CUNYAC; while Medgar Evers falls to 13-9 overall on the year and 4-5 in the conference.

Senior guard Amil John led all scorers for Brooklyn netting a game-high 31 points on 12-for-20 shooting from the field, including going 3-for-6 from three and 4-for-4 from the line. John also dished out six assists, to go along with seven steals.

Senior guard Wade Kornegay netted a career-high 18 points on 6-for-7 shooting from three coming off the bench, while classmate Tyshawn Russell also finished the night with 18 points. Junior forward Steven Grant chipped in with 11 points coming off the bench, as BC's bench outscored the Medgar Evers bench, 29-0.

Winston Douglas recorded a double-double for Medgar Evers with 27 points and a game-high 29 rebounds. Brian Johnson also registered a double-double with 27 points and 12 rebounds, while Malcom Ellis contributed with 17 points. Valin Williams also grabbed 12 rebounds as the Cougars dominated the glass, out-rebounding Brooklyn 69-18, which led to a 24-0 advantage in second chance points for Medgar Evers.

The first half featured a tight back-and-fourth battle with five ties and five lead changes. After a free throw from Russell tied the game at six all at the 16:34 mark, the Courgars ran out on an 11-1 run to take their largest lead of the half, 17-7, with 13:27 left in the half.

The Bulldogs would answer quickly, using a 14-2 run, to regain the lead 21-19 at the 9:00 minute mark. Later on the in half, with the game tied at 25 all with 6:34 remaining before the halftime buzzer, BC used an 8-0 run to take its largest lead of the half, 33-25 at the 4:52 mark. Brooklyn would eventually take a slim 38-25 advantage into the locker room.

BC came out determined to take control of the game, as the Bulldogs scored the first seven points of the second half to take its first double-digit lead of the game, 45-35, with 16:30 left in the game. Following a pair of free throws from John that made it 47-37 (16:10) in favor of Brooklyn, the Cougars used a 10-0 run to tie the game for the sixth time at 47-47, with 14:18 remaining before the final buzzer.

A Kornegay three would end the Medgar Evers run, as the Bulldogs would not allow the Cougars to retake the lead. Brooklyn would eventually rebuild its lead back to double figures, as BC would lead by as many as 14 on two occasions, on its way to the 87-77 victory. Kornegay was a perfect 4-for-4 from downtown in the second half, while John also came up big in the second stanza, where he scored 22 of his game-high 31 points.

Turnovers were the key to the BC victory, as the Bulldogs forced the Cougars into 35 turnovers, compared to just 10 for the Bulldogs, which led to 41 points for Brooklyn. BC also registered 21 steals in game.

Brooklyn returns to action this Saturday, February 4th, as the Bulldogs will play host to Richard Stockton College in a non-conference match up. Tip-off is slated for 3:00 pm at the West Quad Center.
