Saints Upset Second Place Bethany, 68-57

(CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky.) - Senior point guard Daniel Whelan (Cincinnati, Ohio/St. Xavier) scored a game-high 17 to points to lead the Thomas More College men's basketball team to a 68-57 upset win over second place Bethany College tonight (Wednesday, February 1, 2012) in a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) game at the Connor Convocation Center in Crestview Hills, Kentucky. 

With the win, the Saints improve to 14-7 overall and 9-3 in the PAC.  With the loss, the Bison fall to 17-3 overall and 9-2 in the PAC.

Bethany raced out to an early 12-6 lead when Leslie Addy made a three-pointer with 14:30 to play in the first half.  Thomas More answered with a 9-2 run to take a 15-14 lead on a Whelan three-pointer with 11:58 to play in the half.  The Bison responded with a 10-0 run capped by two Brady Pacific three-throws with 7:28 to play in the opening half to take a 24-15 lead.  The Saints came right back with a 15-3 run to retake the lead at 30-27 with 1:08 to play in the first half on a Whelan lay-up.  Bethany closed out the half on a 5-0 run to take a 32-30 lead at halftime when Reece Mabery made a three-pointer at the buzzer.

Bethany's Nick Wilcox made three-pointer to open the second half at the 19:10 mark of the half to extend the lead to 35-30.  Thomas More put together an 8-2 run to take a 38-37 lead with 13:49 to play in the game when senior center Colt Stafford (Groveport, Ohio/Bishop Hartley) made a lay-up.  Wilcox converted a three-point play with 13:25 to play in the game and gave the Bison a 40-38 lead.  The Saints answered with an 18-5 run to take a 56-45 lead with 7:09 to play in the game when junior small forward Phil Feinberg (Tempe, Ariz./Corona Del Sol) made a lay-up.  Bethany responded with a 12-4 run capped by a Wilcox lay-up to cut the lead to 60-57 with 3:28 to play in the game.  That would be as close as the Bison would come as Thomas More closed out the game on an 8-0 for the 68-57 victory.

Whelan led four Saints in double-figures as Stafford had 15 points, freshman small forward Drew Mumford (Louisville, Ky./Christian Academy) had 13 points and Feinberg added 10.  Feinberg led the team on the boards with seven rebounds, while Mumford led the team in assists with five.

The Saints close out their two-game home stand on Saturday (February 4) when they host first place Thiel College at 3 p.m. at the Connor Convocation Center in Crestview Hills, Kentucky.
