Glenside, Pa. (Feb. 1, 2012) - Alvernia University (14-6, 5-4) overcame a 12-point halftime deficit holding Arcadia University (9-11, 2-7) to 17 second-half points in a 55-45 win Wednesday evening in Commonwealth Conference men's basketball action at the Kuch Center.

Alvernia remains in a tie for third with Widener University after the Pride's 78-62 win over Elizabethtown and both teams pick up a game on second-place Lycoming after the Warriors' 92-77 loss to Albright.  Etown slides down into fifth place a game behind Alvernia and Widener.  Messiah remains on top at 8-1 after a home win over Lebanon Valley.

The Crusaders offense was sluggish at best to start Wednesday's game needing better than 15 minutes before it passed 10 points.  The Knights on the other hand scored 26 of the first 35 points for a 26-9 lead.

Alvernia was able to close to within 12 points, 28-16 at the half.

Senior Stefan Thompson (Philadelphia, Pa./G.A.M.P.) started and ended a 10-0, Alvernia run that opened the second half and the Crusaders found themselves within two, 28-26 just four minutes in.  Four minutes later Thompson finished the comeback with another 3.  He finished the night with a game-high 17.

Arcadia took back the lead with a pair of free throws, but a Lamont Clark (Parkesburg, Pa./Octorara) bucket put Alvernia back in front to stay.

Back-to-back layups from Josh Vargas (Allentown, Pa./Faith Christian Academy) helped increase the lead and a Brian Nerney (Middltown, N.J./Red Bank Catholic) dunk pushed it to seven points, 44-37.

Vargas finished with 11 points and Cory Boone (Howard, Pa./Bald Eagle) added 10.

The Crusaders return home for an important game with Lebanon Valley on Saturday.
