Marymount Men’s Hoops Edged by CAC Rival UMW in Double OT Thriller

Fredericksburg, Va. – Marymount University's men's basketball team dropped a thrilling 78-75 double overtime decision to Capital Athletic Conference rival Mary Washington on Wednesday night.  The Saints fall to 4-14 overall and 1-9 in league play.

 

Jesse Konadu led the Saints with a game-high 18 points.  Reed Scott posted a double-double with 17 points and 13 rebounds while Antonio Rouse chipped in 15 points.

 

John Magnani hauled in a game-best 17 rebounds for MU in the loss.

 

Marymount took a 71-70 lead in the second overtime at the 3:43 mark behind three free throws from Rouse over two possessions.  Mary Washington (14-5, 9-1 CAC) responded to take a three-point lead at the 2:11 mark and again with 13 ticks remaining.  The Saints would get within a single point twice in the waning moments but UMW held off the comeback at free throw line to seal the victory.

 

In the first OT, MU took the initial advantage and led most of the way before Mary Washington knotted things up at 68-68 with 1:36 to play.  Neither squad would score again in the stanza to force double overtime.

 

Mary Washington ran out to an early advantage, leading 25-8 after 11 minutes of play.  The Saints then began to battle back and chip away at the lead, outscoring UMW 24-8 the rest of the half to trail by just one going into the break.

 

In the second half, MU took the lead on the opening basket by Scott as part of eight ties and eight lead changes in the frame.  Trailing by three at 63-60 with two minutes to play, Rouse evened things up with a three-pointer at the 1:29 mark for the final points of regulation.

 

Henry Brisibe led the Eagles with 17 points while Sean Armstrong added 13 and Tad Dickman had 10.

 

Marymount returns to the hardwood as it closes out non-conference play on Saturday at Lehman.
