McMINNVILLE, Ore. – A valiant second half comeback came up just short for Pacific Tuesday night as the Boxers rebounded from 24 points down to fall to Linfield 72-66 in Northwest Conference men's basketball action at Ted Wilson Gymnasium.

Trailing by as many as 24 points midway through the second half, the Boxers managed to cut the Linfield lead to single digits thanks to a 25-11 run.  A three-point play by David Berney (Jr., Eugene, Ore.) made it an eight-point game with 1:45 left, but the surge proved too little, too late as the Wildcats canned five free throws in the final 30 seconds to secure the contest.

Ernesto Mayz (So., Caracas, Venezuela) turned in his best game in a Pacific uniform, leading the Boxers with 14 points, which included four three-pointers.  Charles Mosley (Jr., Hillsboro, Ore.) finished just shy of a double-double with 13 points and nine rebounds while Berney also scored 13.  Pacific (8-10, 2-7 NWC) shot just 33.3 percent from the field (21-63), but canned 7 of 20 from three-point range and 17 of 25 from the free throw line.

Zach Anderson turned in a monster game for the Wildcats (4-14, 2-7 NWC), scoring 30 points on 10 of 17 from the field, 4 of 10 from three-point range and 6 of 9 from the charity stripe.  Andrew Batiuk added nine points while David Lee scored seven to go with a game-high 15 rebounds.  Linfield shot 41 percent from the field (19-46) and out-rebounded the Boxers 42-38.

The win was the 325th career victory for Linfield Head Coach Larry Doty, allowing him to surpass his mentor and the gym's namesake as the all-time winningest coach in program history.  Wilson compiled 324 wins in 20 seasons coaching the Wildcats from 1961 to 1981.

Save for one possession early in the first half, Linfield never trailed on the contest.  The Boxers, though, would not make it easy.  Pacific was within four points when Anderson fueled a 6-0 run on his own to give Linfield their first double digit lead, 16-6, at the 11:55 mark.  The Boxers came back within seven on a Cameron Hayes' (So., Milton, Wash.) trey with 8:45 left, but the visitors would make just one more field goal the rest of the half.

Lee built the lead to 29-15 with his jumper with 4:13 left in the stanza, but Mayz hit his first three of the game on the next possession and Berney followed with a bucket to cut the lead to nine.  Linfield went into halftime with a 33-22 lead.

The second half developed with all of the makings for a Linfield rout, with Anderson leading the charge.  The sophomore scored the Wildcats' first five points of the half and 13 of the team's first 18 points, connecting on a three-pointer with 13:18 to go to give his team a 51-30 advantage.  Pacific hit just four shots during first 10 minutes of the period, allowing the Wildcats to build a commanding 24-point lead when Anderson's charity shot with 10:22 left made it a 56-32 game.

From that point, Linfield would connect on just two more shots from the field, opening the door for Pacific to make it a close game.  Mayz connected on a three-pointer to bring the game back within 14 points with 7:15 left, and a pair of Joey Burns (Fr., Hermiston, Ore.) free throws brought the Boxers back within single digits at 63-54 with 3:11 to go.

While Linfield wasn't hitting their jumpers, they were making their free throws.  The Wildcats hit 13 of their final 14 charity attempts, which was enough to keep the Boxers far enough away.  Pacific came within six with three seconds left on a Mayz trey and two Berney free throws before time ran out on the comeback attempt.

Pacific continues a three-game road trip on Saturday as they travel north to Puget Sound.  Tip-off is scheduled for 8 p.m.  The game can be heard live on the Internet by logging in to www.goboxers.com/webcasts.  Linfield travels north Friday to take on Pacific Lutheran.
