Ihsaan ignites! Warriors comeback to down Pride, 66-62

More news about: Lycoming

CHESTER, Pa. – Down by nine points with seven minutes left, junior Ihsaan Davis (Jamaica, N.Y./Christ the King) took over for the Lycoming College men's basketball team, going on his own nine-point run to tie the game and help lead the Warriors to a dramatic 66-62 win over Widener to keep at least a slice of first-place in the Commonwealth Conference on Saturday, Jan. 21, at the Shultz Athletic Center.

"We hung tough," Lycoming head coach Guy Rancourt said. "Widener is a good team year-in and year-out. I'm happy with where we're at. Our juniors are tough and can grind out wins."

Davis went on a personal crusade to get the Warriors (15-2 overall, 5-1 Commonwealth) back in the game after the Pride (11-6 overall, 2-4 Commonwealth) took a 60-51 lead with 7:17 left. A driving layup started the run and then he canned a 3-pointer on a dish from junior Jerald Williams (Riverdale, Md./Bladensberg) to cut the lead to four. After each team missed a pair of shots, Davis hit the front end of a pair of free throws and then, another Widener miss led to a rebound by Davis. On the other end of the floor, Williams found him once again for his 500th career assist and Davis knocked down the trey to tie the game at 60 with 3:54 left.

After each team scored a bucket in the next 1:30, a 3-point miss by the Pride led to a jumper in the paint by senior Mike Bradley (Philadelphia, Pa./St. Joseph's Prep), giving Lycoming a 64-62 lead with 1:48 left.  Widener had three chances to tie the game in the final 90 seconds, but two missed shots and a steal helped Lycoming keep the lead and junior Anthony Martin (Detroit, Mich./Christ the King) cemented the game with a pair of free throws with one second left.

Lycoming used a solid effort from the floor, shooting 49 percent (16-of-33), to build a nine-point lead in the first half, as sophomore Kevin Anthony (Columbus, Ohio/Bridgton Academy) posted 12 points in the half to go with nine from sophomore Michael Rudy (Danville, Pa./Danville). Williams notched eight assists and four rebounds in the first period.

The team's went back and forth for the first five minutes of the half before Anthony connected on his own putback to give Lycoming a 9-8 lead and start an 8-0 run that was capped by a pair of free throws from Anthony. The Pride cut the lead to three a pair of times, but the Warriors answered back each time and used a 10-4 run that was capped by a fastbreak dunk by Anthony on a give from Williams to take a 37-26 lead with 1:39 left in the half.  The Pride scored four of the last six points of the half after that to cut the deficit to nine at the break.

After a bucket by Bradley started the second half, Widener went on a 29-10 run over the next 13 minutes to take a 59-51 lead on a fastbreak layup by Perry Wright with 7:21 left, setting up Davis' game-changing run.

Five Warriors finished in double figures, led by 14 points and 12 rebounds by Bradley, who notched his second double-double of the season. Anthony finished with his 12 first-half points to go with seven rebounds and two blocks. Davis notched 11 points and three rebounds and Rudy added 11 points and eight rebounds. Martin notched 10 points, a block and a steal. Williams finished with 11 assists to reach 500 in his career while adding six rebounds and two steals.

Lamar Jackson posted 16 points, four assists and four rebounds and Rob McPherson added 11 points and six rebounds to lead the Pride. Jack Brennan posted nine points, nine rebounds and five blocks and Andrew Radomicki posted five assists.

The Warriors will wrap up the first half of the Commonwealth Conference schedule on Wednesday, Jan. 25, when it hosts Elizabethtown at 8 p.m. as part of a doubleheader. The women's teams will play at 6 p.m.
