Offense Struggles in Key NCAC Loss at Wittenberg

Wabash was held to a season-low 43 points in a 61-43 loss to 21st-ranked Wittenberg Wednesday night in Springfield, Ohio. The Little Giants were held scoreless for nearly six minutes in the second half in the losing effort.

Freshman Kasey Oetting was bright spot for the Little Giants, scoring a team-high 14 points on 5-of-11 shooting. Aaron Zinnerman added eight points, while Nick Curosh finished with six.

Curosh kept Wittenberg big man Clayton Black in check in the first half, holding the Tigers' leading scorer to one basket in five attempts. Black did most of his damage from the free throw line, hitting all eight of his attempts on the way to a 16-point night. Zack Leahy added 13 points coming off the bench for Wittenberg, as well.

The Little Giants led 11-8 with 12:59 left in the first half before Wittenberg started its first run. The Tigers outscored Wabash 26-11 for the remainder of the half, including a 13-2 run over the final 5:31 of the first period after Wabash had trimmed the lead to 21-20 in favor of Wittenberg.

The Tigers, ranked 21st in the latest D3hoops.com poll. scored the first eight points of the second period to take a 42-24 lead before Curosh scored on a layup. Wittenberg pushed the advantage to as many as 25 points.

The loss drops Wabash into a tie with Ohio Wesleyan and DePauw for second place in the North Coast Athletic Conference standings. Wittenberg owns a two-game lead with a record of 7-0 in NCAC games and an overall record of 13-3.

Wabash, 16th in the D3hoops.com top-25 poll heading into the contest, falls to 13-3 overall and 5-2 in NCAC games with the loss. The Little Giants will return to Chadwick Court on Saturday for a 7 p.m. contest against Kenyon College. The Lords (8-8, 2-5 NCAC) defeated Oberlin College 73-70 on Wednesday evening.
