Men's Basketball Downed 83-70 By New Paltz

NEW PALTZ, NY (November 30, 2011) -- The Vassar College men's basketball team found 40 points off the bench but fell 83-70 to cross-river rival SUNY New Paltz on Wednesday night at the Hawk Center. Vassar sophomore Sam Rappaport erupted for a game-high 27 points off the bench, shooting 10-for-20 from the floor with five 3-pointers.

Vassar's only lead of the game came at 2-0 but the Brewers kept the deficit to single digits for much of the contest. New Paltz had a 25-10 edge in free throws and a 38-23 advantage in rebounds.

The Brewers (2-2) host Sarah Lawrence College on Saturday, December 3, at 4:00 p.m. The Hawks (2-2) face SUNY Fredonia on Friday at 8:00 p.m.

The Hawks entered intermission with a 42-36 lead but started the second half with a 6-0 run for a 48-36 lead. Vassar shaved the lead to four points on two occasions but came no closer.

Down 11 points at 50-39 with 16:39 remaining, Rappaport hit a 3-pointer and a free throw to key a 7-0 Vassar run. Ladan followed with a layup inside and a free throw to bring Vassar to 50-46.

Jamal Lis-Simmons scored on the Hawks' next possession to extend the lead to six points. In the next play, an offensive board and layup by Lucas Wager put Vassar within four points once again at 52-48. The lead lingered in single digits over the next few minutes but the Brewers couldn't break through.

Matt Devine and Harris Wichard propelled the Hawks with 23 and 22 points, respectively. Wichard pulled down a game-high 10 boards to complete the double-double.

Freshman Luka Ladan led Vassar with eight boards and posted 12 points.
