NORTON, MA (January 3, 2012) -- The Vassar College men's basketball team led 29-27 at halftime but fell 93-70 to Wheaton College on Tuesday as the teams erupted for a combined 107 second-half points. Wheaton built its lead on a 22-3 run to begin the second half.

The Brewers had four scorers in double figures, led by junior Jon Herzog with 16 points. Freshman Johnny Mrlik scored 15 points, followed by classmate Alex Snyder with 14 points, and sophomore Sam Rappaport with 11 points.

The Brewers (4-4) begin Liberty League play on the road against Skidmore on Friday, January 6, at 8:00 p.m. and against Union on Saturday at 4:00 p.m. The Lyons (6-4) host Rhode Island College on January 5 at 7:00 p.m.

Vassar led 29-27 after a close first half that featured seven lead changes and three ties, but a slow start in the second half allowed the Lyons a 49-32 lead behind a six-minute 22-3 run. Brendan Degnan fueled the run with 12 points, going 3-for-3 from beyond the arc, and Cliften Desravines chipped in with seven points.

The Lyons led by double-figures for the remainder of the contest but Vassar cut the lead to 11 points at 79-68 following a layup by sophomore Sam Rappaport with 3:56 to play. The Lyons made six-straight free throws to push the lead to 17 points at 85-68 with 2:25 left to play. 

Wheaton shot an efficient 63.3 percent from the field in the second half for a season-high 47.5 percent (28-of-59) for the game. The Lyons went 22-for-25 from the free throw line in the second half.

Vassar's largest lead of the game came at 11-5 five minutes in on a layup by Snyder.

For Vassar, Mrlik tallied a game-high five steals. Snyder led the team with six rebounds.

For Wheaton, Degnan finished with a game-high 24 points to go with five boards and four assists. Desravines recorded his third double-double of the season with 21 points, 10 rebounds and a pair of blocks for the Lyons. Anthony Weeks posted an 11-point, 10-rebound double-double.
