Cardinals Feature Balanced Attack in Win over John Jay College

More news about: York (N.Y.)

York's leading scorer, Tony Vails, was forced to sit out tonight's contest due to an injury but his teammates picked up their play to make up for his loss.  William Holley added a team-high 19 points and Shamir Wilkinson recorded a double-double, scoring 12 points and grabbing 11 boards to lead the Cardinals.  Omari Phipps added 13 points and five boards and Kevin Lausell chipped in 12 points and three assists.

The game was close throughout most of the first half, with five lead changes in the first 11 minutes.  Leading by just two points, (25-23) with 4:15 left in the opening half, the Cardinals were able to open up their lead to ten points (33-23) leading up to halftime.   York held the Bloodhounds scoreless over the last 4:15 and closed with buckets by Holley and Phipps in the final minute to take the double-digit lead.

York held the lead for the entire second half but John Jay made it interesting for most of the game.  The Cardinals looked to be in control when they matched their largest lead of the game to that point (61-47), following a three-point play by Michael Edwards with 9:26 to play.

However, John Jay responded back with their biggest run of the game, scoring 11 unanswered to close to within three points (61-58) with 7:48 to play.  Three-pointers by Kris Owens and Isaiah Holman were the key buckets for the Bloodhounds during the run.

That would be as close as they could get though.  York scored on five of its next six possessions to move back up by 11 points (69-58) with 5:09 to play.   The game was never in question from that point on, as York led by as many as 17 points the rest of the way.

The Bloodhounds were led by Jerome Alexander, who netted a game-high 23 points in defeat.  Swindon Charles registered a double-double, scoring 16 points and pulling down 12 rebounds.

The win improves York's record to 6-11, 2-2 in the CUNYAC, while John Jay drops to 8-19, 1-4 in the CUNYAC.  York will host Lehman College on Friday at 8:00 p.m.
