WATERVILLE -- The University of Maine at Farmington men's basketball team was handed its first North Atlantic Conference loss as the Beavers fell to Thomas College 81-73 this afternoon.

UMF (7-5 overall, 7-1 NAC), which had a five-game winning streak snapped, is scheduled to take on Bowdoin College Tuesday at 7 p.m. in Brunswick. The Terriers improved to 8-5 (5-3).

Kevin Leary (Manchester, Maine) led all scorers with 19 points for the Beavers, including five 3-pointers, while Pet Sumner (Cramerton, N.C.) knocked down four treys and finished with 18 points. Andrew Dickey (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) added 11 points in the loss with Yusuf Iman (Auburn, Maine) supplying nine points, eight rebounds and six assists.

UMF, which held a 39-36 lead at intermission, turned the ball over 25 times with the Terriers scoring 24 points off the handouts.

Jarrad DeVaughn scored 17 points for Thomas with Franklin Salvador chipping in 14 points and Stanley Greene Jr. providing 11 points.

Over the first 26 minutes of play, the game featured six ties and neither team held a lead of more than five points until a Ryan Newton layup thrust Thomas into a 50-44 advantage with 13:20 left in regulation. Leary answered with a 3-pointer, but the Terriers outscored UMF 8-2 over the next two minutes with an Antonio Juco steal-and-slam boosting the hosts' command to 58-49 with 10:25 to play.

The lead grew to 62-51 on an Eric Westbrooks layup, but the Beavers put together an 11-3 stretch with Sumner draining 3-pointers on back-to-back trips to cut the deficit to 65-62 with 7:07 left. Thomas led 70-67 before a DeVaughn three and a Martin Cleveland basket gave the Terriers at 75-67 lead with two minutes to go and went four of five from the charity stripe down the stretch for the 81-73 win.
