VIRGINIA BEACH -- Anyone who might have wondered what would happen to Virginia Wesleyan College's men's basketball team on an "off day" from the field found out Saturday.

The Marlins dealt with their worst shooting effort of the season, hitting just 36% from the field, but had the depth and talent to deal Roanoke College's Maroons a 75-59 setback in Old Dominion Athletic Conference play at the Jane P. Batten Student Center.

The No. 2 ranked Marlins, who won their 13th consecutive game to improve to 13-1 overall and to 6-0 in the conference, hit less than 30% from the field throughout much of the first half, but never trailed the visiting Maroons (4-10, 0-5).  In fact, the Marlins pushed out to a 20-8 lead, helped by some timely triples from Art Crew (Williamsburg, Va./Lafayette) and Chris Teasely (Newport News, Va./Menchville).

Roanoke, sparked by Kwasi Amponsah (Woodbridge, Va./Garfield), pulled within four points twice in the closing minutes of the half, but VWC padded its lead when Chris Astorga (Suffolk, Va./Virginia Beach Cape Henry Collegiate) hit a triple to make it a 31-24 score.  The Marlins went on to hold a 33-26 lead at halftime.

Scoring by Logan Singleton (Roanoke, Va./Hidden Valley), Stefan Vulevic (Seribia/Roanoke Catholic), and Amponsah helped the Maroons stay within six points of the Marlins through the first five minutes of the second half.  But, it never got closer as Virginia Wesleyan used a 14-6 scoring run to push out to a 54-40 lead.  Astorga and Teasley both hit a triple each in the surge.

Virginia Wesleyan maintained a double-digit lead from that point on.

Astorga led all scoring, finishing with 22 points.  He hit on 7-of-15 field goal attempts and 4-of-7 triples en route to recording his 11th consecutive double-figure scoring game.  Senior Donald Vaughn (Woodbridge, Va./Dumfries Potomac) added 15 points, hitting 5-of-10 from the field, sophomore D.J. Woodmore (Virginia Beach/Landstown) scored 14 points, helped by a 10-of-10 showing from the free throw lines, and Teasley finished with 12 points.

A consistent defensive effort by the Marlins helped force 25 Roanoke turnovers. VWC recorded 17 steals, led by Vaughn with a career-high six.  VWC also recorded 15 assists, led by Crew with five for the third consecutive game.

Amponsah paced Roanoke with 18 points and Singleton finished with 11.  Adam Kessler (Norfolk, Va./Maury) led all rebounding with 11.  Vaughn had nine rebounds for VWC.

Virginia Wesleyan returns to competition on Saturday, Jan. 21, hosting Guilford College's Quakers in an ODAC contest starting at 2 p.m.
