UMHB men stay perfect with win over Schreiner

Kerrville, TX— The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor men's basketball team took control of the game early in the first half and never let Schreiner back into the game as the Cru rolled to an 80-60 victory over the Mountaineers Thursday night in Kerrville. UMHB, ranked 8th in the country by D3hoops.com, improves to 14-0 overall and 10-0 in American Southwest Conference play with the victory. The loss drops Schreiner to 8-6 overall and 6-4 in the ASC on the season.

UMHB dominated the early going, building a 22-5 lead midway through the first half. Schreiner would rally late in the first half, but the Cru would lead 40-22 at halftime with over half of the Mountaineers points coming from the free-throw line. UMHB held Schreiner to just 5-31 shooting in the first-half. The Cru led by at least 16 points throughout the second half in rolling to the victory.

Marlon Miller topped UMHB with 20 points and he also pulled down a team-best 10 rebounds. Sterling Phillips had 15 points and nine boards for the Cru. James Allen chipped in 14 points and Dorian Purnell had 10. UMHB shot 50 percent in the second half and hit 46 percent for the game. The Cru also out rebounded Schreiner 59-42.

Stevan Guerrero and Darren Smith led the Mountaineers with 14 points apiece. A.J, Myres added 13 points and Travis Pflughaupt grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds. The Mountaineers shot just 24 percent from the field in the game.

The UMHB men will now return home to host Texas Lutheran University in a 3:00 PM tip-off on Saturday at the Mayborn Campus Center. The Cru will hit the road for the crucial Abilene swing next week to play key ASC West Division road games at Hardin-Simmons University and McMurry University.
