Reading, Pa. (Jan. 11, 2012) - Junior guard Josh Vargas (Allentown, Pa./Faith Christian Academy) scored a career-high 27 points to lead Alvernia University (10-3, 2-1) to its eighth straight win--a 66-52 win over Arcadia University (8-5, 2-1) Wednesday evening in Commonwealth Conference men's basketball action at the Physical Education Center.
Arcadia ran off a 12-0 run in the second half to cut an 18-point deficit down to six points, 54-48 with 5:59 to play, but Vargas answered the Knights' 1-3-1 zone with one of his four 3s a minute later to push the lead back to 10 and the Crusaders moved into an early-season tie with the Knights at 2-1 in league play.
Alvernia took a nine-point lead, its biggest of the first half, on a three-point play from senior center Cory Boone (Howard, Pa./Bald Eagle) with 2:55 on the clock, but Arcadia closed with six of the last eight points to hit the break down five, 32-27.
Boone and Brian Nerney (Middletown, N.J./Red Bank Catholic) scored back-to-back in the paint to open the second half and Terrance Bridgers (Drexel Hill, Pa./Upper Darby) hit a 3 to push Alvernia's lead to 12 points, 39-27. The lead hit 14 points on a Vargas 3 and was at 18 points, the largest of the night, on a Vargas layup as the clocked ticked under 10 to play.
Boone finished the night with 10 points and eight rebounds. Arcadia got a team-high 11 points from Travis Saltus. The Knights crushed the offensive glass for 21 rebounds, but were only able to turn that advantage into eight second-chance points.
Alvernia continues the conference schedule this Saturday at Lebanon Valley College in a rematch of last year's conference final won by the Crusaders.
