BIDDEFORD, Maine -- The Gordon College men's basketball team shot 50 percent (14-for-28) from the floor in the second half to come away with a 56-46 Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) victory over the University of New England at James A. Beaudry Gymnasium Tuesday evening.

Sophomore Alex Carnes (Phoenix, Ariz.) scored nine of his game-high 13 points in the final period to pace the Fighting Scots (5-6, 4-0 CCC), and added in eight rebounds. Classmate Park Thomas (Scottsdale, Ariz.) contributed nine points and nine rebounds. Junior David Dempsey (Wallingford, Conn.) scored all of his eight points after halftime, and first-year Hans Miersma (Whitinsville, Mass.) put together an 8-point, 10-rebound effort, helping the visitors finish with a 51-28 advantage on the glass.

For UNE (0-11, 0-4), senior Jarryd Rossignol (Caribou, Maine) tallied 10 points, and junior Charles Fenner III (Bronx, N.Y.) ended with nine points and three steals.

Leading 32-31 with 13 minutes left, Gordon notched the next seven points to establish some control of the contest. The margin was reduced to as little as five on two occasions as the period progressed -- the last coming at 41-36 with 5:44 to go -- but UNE could not get any closer.

Early on, both squads struggled to find the range, as a free throw by Fenner 3:24 into the match went as the game's first point. The Fighting Scots posted 12 of the next 14 on the board to gain a nine-point cushion (12-3) midway through the frame, and still held that edge until five points in the final minute of the half brought UNE to within four (22-18) at the break.

After Thomas opened the second with a quick jumper, senior Ryan Knotek (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) sparked a another quick five for the Nor'easters, knocking down a trey on the following trip and poking away a steal as Gordon looked to answer, which ended in a fastbreak lay-up for Big Blue.

A Miersma bucket was eventually countered by a trifecta from UNE senior J.D. Winn (Austin, Texas), and the game was tied at 26-26 with just over 17 minutes remaining.

Each team returns to the hardwood on Thursday as league play continues. Gordon puts its unbeaten CCC mark on the line with a visit to Roger Williams University (8 p.m.), while the Nor'easters are set to entertain Curry College (7:30 p.m.).
