MC Falls to Wittenberg in Tournament Finale

Despite a strong first half, the Maryville College Fighting Scots fell to the Wittenberg University Tigers 77-70 in the finale of the 2012 James C. Campbell Memorial Tournament on the Scots' campus on Tuesday evening.

MC took a 44-38 lead into the half behind a strong 61% shooting effort from the floor. Freshman Christian Ford was 3-for-3 from beyond the arc while the Scots finished 6-for-11 from long distance at the break. The Tigers kept pace with 20 points in the paint and a 4-for-5 effort from three-point distance. Wittenberg amazingly out shot MC with a 68% efficiency.

The second half saw the Springfield, Ohio school whittle away the Scots' lead with 22 of their 39 points in the paint. Wittenberg forced seven Maryville turnovers in the second half and scored 17 points off MC miscues.  The Scots could not find their touch in the final period hitting only 33% of their shots while going 3-for-11 from beyond the arc. The Tigers finished shooting 57% from the field while MC ended the game hitting 47% of their offerings.

Wittenberg (9-3) was paced by Clayton Black's 22 point effort. The post player was 7-for-11 from the field and 8-for-10 on free-throws. Tournament MVP Zack Leahy added 18 points while also going 7-for-11 from the field. Michael Cooper added 12 points while Alex Brandt was named to the All-Tournament team following an eight point, six rebound effort.

Maryville (8-6) was led by Christian Ford's 17 points. Ford was 5-for-6 from three-point territory. All-Tournament selection Milton Stanley added 14 points on 7-of-16 shooting. He also added a game-high five assists and six rebounds. Alex Rivera helped MC's offense with 11 points while Oscar Butler led MC on the boards with seven rebounds.
