BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Senior forward Reid Christian (Pownal, Maine) posted career-highs with 30 points and 12 boards to lead Bates College to a 74-54 victory over the University of New England men's basketball team in non-conference action Tuesday evening at James A. Beaudry Gymnasium.

The win ends a two-game skid for the Bobcats, who improve to 6-4 overall. UNE remains winless in nine outings.

Christian accounted for half of his team's offense in the final period, scoring 20 points -- the majority coming on a trio of makes from long distance and seven freebies. For the game, he converted 10 of 12 tries at the charity stripe. Both the scoring and rebounding totals were personal bests for Christian, whose efforts in previous games had reached highs of 17 (points) and seven (rebounds).

Senior John Squires (Swampscott, Mass.) added 12 points and six caroms for Bates, which out-rebounded its opponent by a 41-29 margin. Junior Mark Brust (Duxbury, Mass.) and first-year Graham Safford (Hampden, Maine) chipped in with seven points apiece.

For the Nor'easters, junior Alex Alsadi (Scottsdale, Ariz.) notched a team-high 13 points on 4-of-5 shooting from both the floor and the line, and also had five rebounds to go with a pair of steals. Senior Jarryd Rossignol (Caribou, Maine) contributed 10 points off the bench, and classmate Marcus Winn (Austin, Texas) tallied nine.

Bates scored the initial eight points of the match and led 15-7 midway through the opening frame. Big Blue responded with nine straight in a span of 2:32 to go up by one (16-15) with just under seven minutes left in the half.

From there, the visitors put 19 of the next 22 points up on the board to assume a 34-19 advantage at the break. The Bobcats connected on 52 percent (13-for-25) of their shot attempts in the stanza, while the Nor'easters struggled to just an 18 percent (5-for-28) clip.

Bates built the difference up to as many as 25 (54-29) in the second period, before the teams settled on the 20-point margin in the end.

The Bobcats head to face the nation's top-ranked team in Middlebury College on Friday (8 p.m.) for the NESCAC opener. UNE resumes Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) play on Saturday, with a road date against Roger Williams University (3 p.m.).
