LANCASTER, Pa. -- Jon Salandra tallied a career-high 18 points and pulled down nine boards to lead No. 9 Franklin & Marshall to a 68-55 over Misericordia in the first round of the 45th Annual Sponaugle New Years Tournament hosted by F&M Monday evening. The Diplomats remain unbeaten on the season and improved to 10-0 while the Cougars fell to 8-4.

Down 5-2 just over three minutes into the contest, F&M went on an 11-0 run over the next ten minutes to take a 13-5 lead at 6:50.  The teams traded buckets over the next minute before F&M put together run to blow the game wide open. The Diplomats scored eight unanswered in a two-minute span to go up 23-8 with 3:20 remaining the half.

Misericordia outscored F&M 6-2 throughout the final three minutes of action to make it 25-14 at the break.
F&M opened the second stanza with a 9-2 run, and added another 8-0 run minutes later, to go up 36-26 with 13:19 left to play. The Diplomats maintained a double-digit advantage during the next eight minutes of action and led by as much 14 before the Cougars edge closer.
 
Misericordia came within eight points, 55-47, at 4:51 before the Diplomats tallied seven straight to go up 15 points, 62-47, with 2:53 remaining. 
 
Georgio Milligan netted 16 points and dished out nine assists.  Milligan is eight points shy of tying assistant coach Brandon Smith '06 for the sixth spot on the all-time scoring list. Smith finished his career with 1,543 points.  Hayk Gyokchyan and Austin Alecxih both tallied nine points and Brandon Beckford ended with eight.
 
F&M forced 23 turnovers which resulted in 31 points and pulled down 31 rebounds to the Cougars' 17.
 
The Diplomats will face Hobart tomorrow evening at 7:00 p.m. in the championship game. The Statesmen defeated Drew 91-62 in first game of the tournament. Misericordia will face Drew at 5:00 p.m. in the third place game.
