Ashland, Va. – The Farmingdale State men's basketball team defeated Kean University in the opening day of the Randolph-Macon Coaches Classic by the final score of 77-60. The Rams (7-2) will now face host Randolph-Macon in the Championship game on Friday night at 7:00p.m., while the Cougars (2-9) will face Baruch College on Friday in the consolation matchup at 5:00 p.m.

It was a slow scoring first half with Kean holding a slight 13-12 lead after 10 minutes of play, before Farmingdale picked up the pace with a 20-6 run over the last 10 minutes of the half to take a 32-19 into the break. 

The Cougars were not able to overcome the deficit in the second half as the Rams held a double-digit lead for most of the final 20 minutes.

Junior forward AJ Matthews (Brooklyn, N.Y.) finished with game-highs of 20 points, 17 rebounds and six blocks to lead the Rams. Senior guard Joshua Smith (Deer Park, N.Y.) finished with 13 points, five rebounds and four assists. Senior forward Robert Adon (New York, N.Y.) had 11 points, including three from long range. Junior guard Ryan Davis (Flushing, N.Y.) led with a team-high six assists, five rebounds and eight points.

For Kean, sophomore Michael Burton led the Cougars with nine points while sophomore Kyle Latorre and junior Anthony Gibson each collected five rebounds. Burton finished the game with a team-high 17 points while teammate Kenny Pace added 13. Senior Andrew Kirey tallied 11 points.
